  • Thanks everyone! In the interim, while I'm waiting for the electrician to come and fit the timer, I'm heading the immersion between 6am and 7am on work days (when I'm up early enough) and on non-work days seem to have enough hot water to last from one overnight heat (although it is still noisy at about 1am so I get up and switch it off, I hope the electrician will sort that issue).
I'm also finding out a lot more about ways to use electricity overnight to make use of the Economy 7 tariff, as the daytime rate is very high.

I doubt you need a timer. If you have two switches, I suspect the lower one is on the off peak circuit, so it will only come on over night.
  • UPDATE...
I have now had a timer fitted. The electrician removed the "boost" switch and I now have 1 switch which has the timer attached. It is set to come on for 2 hours overnight every night (as cheap rate) it is brilliant. I always have hot water now, enough for baths and washing up! It is sometimes a bit noisy at night but as it's on a timer I don't need to get up to turn it off, it will go off on its own. Great solution and (when I get my next bill) hopefully a lot cheaper than boosting at peak rate.
  • Update *********
My January bill was £141 and my February bill is £110. That's a great start!
Next step is to install a timer dishwasher so I can run both dishwasher & washing machine overnight at cheap rate.
With the weather getting warmer too I've turned one storage heater off altogether and have turned down the input on the others.
It will be good to see a year's worth of bills and average them out come December this year.

    Couple of these.

Or just get one between them unless you need to run them both the same night.

Yep, already got one for my heated clothes drier and I always run that overnight.
I don't own a dishwasher yet so buying one with a timer will be easy. ( Also difficult to reach a plug in timer behind a dishwasher!! )
