Default on Nationwide account not my fault.

Hi,
I am after some advise as I have recently noticed I have a default on a Nationwide account which is affecting my credit rating.
My ex partner and I took out a joint account together when we bought our house. After some time we separated and sold the house which was registered to this bank account and I requested via online banking the account to be closed, I received a response which said my query would be dealt with within 5 working days. I assumed the account would be closed at this point. We had no income going into the account and no outgoings or outstanding balances.
I have now tried to obtain another mortgage only to be rejected for bad credit. I assumed this was a mistake however after doing a credit check it seems that the account is still very much active and we have a default on the account for £250. (the account itself was £10 a month so these are the payments which have caused the problem).
Could I please have any advice on how best to deal with this situation and if i would be in my right to demand this be removed as it was no fault of my own.
Thanks!

Hi,
If you are saying that you requested account closure by 'secure online message', then the account should have been closed (assuming there was no balance outstanding).
If this is the case then I suggest you make a written complaint to Nationwide, clearly stating you requested account closure on DD/MM/YYYY.I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Both parties are required to close the account I believe.
As it’s a joint account you’re both equally responsible for it and thusly any charges will be applicable to both account holders0 -

Thanks all.

I don't understand why some folk advise following the argumentative and awkward route when, in my experience, a quick phone call can usually sort out a problem. I have an account with Nationwide and have always been really happy with them. If a phone call can't do it, then an appointment with the manager usually works. Once an error is discovered, it isn't a problem to put right. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts.
