If that happened then the there would be no BBC which would be a great loss. Why would you want to lose high quality programming?
Why should the rest of us be under penalty if we don't wish to engage in the BBC's highway robbery scheme?0 -
I say this, because once a new home is sold (& No TVL is taken out - or even just a change of ownership) I am told that the threatening letters soon start coming - so these databases are obviously monitored.
When my mother died I informed TVL who thanked me for the info. I visited my mother's flat about 10 days later to start the clear out of the property prior to vacating.
A threatening letter had already arrived, suggesting that a visit would be forthcoming if a license wasn't purchased!!Unbelieveable!!0 -

Apart from all their other failings, they are also incompetent.
The intensity of their letters has a tendency to add insult to injury when they mess up.0 -

Thanks, but far too much effort!:D As the letters can be identified from the outside I can just do a gentle lob into the log basket. Obviously there's a bit of a build up over the summer when I'm not using the stove...
As I've never owned (had possession, used etc, etc.) a colour tv in the 35 years I've owned a property I'd obviously receive a visit with equanimity. It will be fascinating to see what they say when they eventually visit and find me at home. As they won't have seen any evidence of TV use what can they say? Something incredibly stupid like "can we see your TV licence"? I'm mischievously intrigued. :-)0 -
I agree that BBC dramas are usually very good, but form a very tiny part of the broadcasting time for BBC1. I rarely watch BBC2 and never watch the other BBC channels.
Also,we have to pay for BBC in order to watch any other channels, yet all the BBC channels together form a small part of total 'free' to view tv.
The recently published, huge, unrealistic salaries paid (for such 'talents' as reading the news ) have caused even more discontent.0 -
Good luck with your decision. Paying the TVL is a bind, but I do so with pride at times (for BBC Drama (Peaky Blinder, Taboo, Line of Duty, Doctor Foster, Sherlock, & Happy Valley etc), BBC News, BBC 2&4, radio iPlayer, BBC Online etc.).
It pays for so much more than BBC broadcasting, though not sure it can be argued any more it allows the BBC to remain free of political interest.
Look at it as a voluntary or in your case involuntary crowd/fundraising vehicle.Free thinker.:cool:0 -
Peaky Blinder, Line of Duty, Doctor Foster, Sherlock, & Happy Valley are all on Netflix in their vast library of tv shows and films. I also use Amazon's service. I gave up live TV over a year ago the money saved on the licence pays for what I want to watch. Its seems strange to me now that people watch what the broadcasters deem fit to broadcast to them.0

For mainly financial reasons I have no landline & no web access at home so the above services are not an option for me at home unless I am on the move or in a library.
You are also accessing what Amazon and Netflix 'choose' to make available.Free thinker.:cool:0 -
I was in the Scottish independence campaign in 2014 where I watched the BBC show their bias.
Since then I have never paid a TV licence (but would happily pay if Scotland got a better deal - I do not want the BBC in Scotland to be pro indy but only neutral and impartial).
Many pro indy supporters I know have stopped paying and don't watch live TV or Iplayer.
We now have a Kodi stick (and a VPN for it) as well as Netflix so don't need a TV licence
I did get a bit of hassle from TVL but they stopped when I pointed out that I have CCTV and by turning up at my front door they were agreeing to being recorded and having the images published.
They have not been in over 2 years.0
