You can send texts from anywhere to anywhere, provided you have coverage and the receiving phone is on within a certain period after it was sent, usually up to a week.I have a mobile registered with Three here in the uk.If on holiday in the USA can i send and receive texts to friends and family from this phone.
But the tariff might be quite high - you'll find info on the 3 website.
Other choices might be to get a US SIM card, or use one of several mobile Java client programs which send via wap/grps, costing 2 to 5 cents per message plus a bit of data cost. I don't know that 3 will support this, so it might be worth using say a Virgin payg SIM0 -

I would have said you can read a thread about the mobile Java providers like Smsbug, Mobisms and Vyke, but there are some posts missing from the forum at the moment0

Maybe not practicable for you? but International texting via the internet is the cheapest way
Sign up to the 18185 service on the internet with your home phone detais and your mobile phone number as well. Then on the internet you can text any mobile anywhere in the world for around a 1p. (your mobile number will be on the text sent so the recipent knows the text is from you)
