Mrs

We have recently had a new kitchen fitted. The company we bought the kitchen from supplied the plumber. When he was plumbing in our appliances, we mentioned that the down pipe in the garage was leaking. He said he would sort that out too. However, when the invoice arrived for the kitchen, there was a large additional cost on this from the plumber for the downpipe. He never mentioned this cost to us before doing the work so it came as a surprise to us. As we were not made aware of any additional costs beforehand, do we have to pay them?

Did you think he would do it for free?

You asked for a service to be carried out. He i assume did the job?

Therefore you pay him. Unless you ssked him how much it would cost and he told you it would be either free or a different rate?

If it's not on the kitchen quote you were given then it would be charged as an extra. Surely you weren't expecting to get it done for free - how much has been charged and how long did it take him?

You had a quote (presumably) for fitting the kitchen which included the kitchen plumbing.

You were invoiced for that amount (I assume)?

You later asked for an additional job to be done, but failed to get a quote for this.

You were invoiced for that job.

You have no cause to complain and no reason not to pay.

You have now learned that when asking contractors to do work for you it is sensible to get a quote for that work.

FWIW when making a new post, "title" is the the title of your post, such as "unexpected charge from plumber" not your marital status :D

I think the plumber should have said what he would will charge you, and you should have asked. How long did it take and how much does he want?

First rookie mistake for dealing with a contractor/ tradesman, always ask for the cost before agreeing. Expensive lesson

They agreed to fix it . . . They fixed it.
    Do you work for nothing?

Of course you have to pay it.
  • By the title of this thread, are you insinuating that you offered him your ‘Mrs’ in exchange for the work? If that is the case, then perhaps you could post a picture so we could see if it was reasonable to still make a charge
20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D
