It can be hard to get large packs of things like sodium bicarbonate, borax and so on.
*nods* ... I remember being able to buy both of those in large packs in just about any chemist

if you've got a Chinese supermarket locally, you'll be able to buy them there quite cheaply

I've also used it for years for making Elderflower cordial. Never a problem until summer 06. Since we have no wine-making shops near us I tried 3 small pharmacies and none had any. I sent my son (in his 20s) to a large Boots chemists. At this point I didn't know that it was used for other things!! He came home & said "what IS that stuff you wanted me to get? They gave me suspicious looks and said they hadn't got any." So then I then went to another chemist and the woman said they don't stock it any more & I said "why not, I have used it for years for my E.Cordial" so she explained that drug addicts used it and it was on their list of "banned" items.

Daft thing is I then went to another chemists & she added me to their waiting list. She said when it comes in it just flies off the shelves!!

Citric Acid is available in Wilkos on the shelf in the wine making section. No need to face the do-gooder pharmacy assistants! HTH

In defence of the pharmacy assistants, they are probably being told they can't sell it by their boss.
I used to work in a pharmacy and citric acid has been restricted in many areas because addicts and dealers were buying the stuff by the ton. Yes, yes I know that doesn't make a blind bit of difference to those that just want it for normal use but its those in charge that make these daft rules not the staff.
I have never heard of any pharmacy assistant asking why a customer wants citric acid - theres no need.
Many pharmacies still keep it behind the counter.

I was reading a leaflet for a drug outreach project today, and they give out free citric acid. You might have to go for a counselling session though.

  • I have been looking all over recently for citric acid as I wanted to make bath bombs (as in the fizzy things that go in your bath, not things that blow up baths!) and can't find it. There is a seller on Ebay with a wine making shop who sells 100g tubs for just over £2

mentioned earlier in the thread ... if you have an Asian/Halal grocer locally, it's available in (usually) 100g packs beside the packs of spices, around 65p last time I bought some

    HTH :)
  • Funny that Whittards sell packets of it for £5 as I bought a new kettle in Tesco for £3.50....

I used to buy citric acid from the chemist and mix it with sugar and red colouring to make sherbert for my kids. They DID get a bit wild after eating it now I come to think about it; I thought it was the red colouring I used.....
