private plate held on [STRIKE]retention certificate[/STRIKE]
after paying for this , what is the cost to me to place it on one of my vehicles
I know cost of insurance change (admin) , but what do DVLA charge
edit : I am reading this
Other DVLA transfer costs involve the transfer of a private mark onto a retention document (V778). This is a green A4 sized piece of paper, which “holds” the number plate until a suitable vehicle is available. To place a mark onto retention involves an initial cost of £105, £25 of which represents the retention fee and the remaining £80 being “stored” on the document as an eventual assignment fee.
by reading this , no fee is payable by me?

https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/keep-or-assignApply to assign a number
If the vehicle is:
registered to you - apply online or by post
a used vehicle you just bought - wait for DVLA to send you a new V5C in your name before you apply online or by post
brand new - give the dealer your V750 or V778 document and ask them to apply
registered to someone else and you want the private number to be be transferred to them - apply online or by post
It’s free to apply online or by post. You need the vehicle’s log book (V5C).
If you already have a private number on your vehicle, apply to take it off first. You could lose the right to use the number if you do not.
Edit: Just realised you said £105 in total.....where are you getting that info from? .gov.uk site (if you click on the "take a private number off a vehicle" option in the link I provided) it quotes £80 only and I'm sure the last time we retained a plate it was only £80.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

Why? Retention lasts 10 years, and you can renew it.

That wording comes from a plate company's 2014 blog piece:

A better source is the horse's mouth:

ok , deal done , I have photocopy/photo of certificate , its in the name of guy that bought from DVLA
do i have to update this , like I would a V5 , or is his name acceptable0 -
He assigns the retention certificate to you, and you get one in your name. You then put it on your car.0

umm , no he sold it to me and is posting it he has not assigned it0
-
Edit: the plate has come from the DVLA and is new unassigned , (its actually MY07*** and is on the dvla pink v790 form0

Did he list a plate that he didnt actually own but was available on the DVLA website?
So you bought from him and then he purchased it? Where you could have gone onto the DVLA site and purchased it yourself and left him out of it?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
