NPower out of contract bill

Options
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could help...

I own a business (cafe) and have a business account with NPower. My bill for this quarter has come at around £3,800 more than it normally is and should be and whilst I am a seasonal business that relies on my summer trade this is in fact a winter bill. I have been told this is because my contract ran out and I have been on their out of contract rate. However, this seems extremely excessive and ridiculous. I have spoken to them on multiple occasions but they are giving the same answers that they gave me warning in a former bill in small print about the contract ending and that their out of contract rates are expensive and it has to be paid.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any similar problems with them or any ways this bill can be resolved to the more modest sum I am used to paying?

I am also concerned that if they are capable of this then they are capable of doing similar things to the elderly or to the most vulnerable in society which could have disastrous effects if people can't use their heating as we enter the cold spell we are all anticipating.

Domestic customers are somewhat protected by legislation and there is an energy price cap to further reinforce that. Business customers are expected to carry out due diligence when signing up to contracts and be aware of when that contract expires. I suspect you will be paying around 32p kWh and 91p daily plus VAT. All you can do is get another contract sorted as soon as you can. Interestingly Scottish Power's published out of contract rates are almost half that of NPower.

As molerat says, domestic customers (consumers) are subject to stricter controls than businesses.

If you run a business, you are expected to know what you are doing ... or employ someone, directly or indirectly, that does :)

There are other suppliers out there other than nPower.

Ring around and see whats on offer. Don't go through a broker.

    I've just got 15p / unit and 24p s/c on a business tariff doing 25000 units a year
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

That's interesting, as I've just renewed our Village Hall electricity business contract (8000 units pa) on a four year fix.

If I had gone directly to British Gas it was 17.9p/unit and 23.4p s/c, going through a broker I got it for 14.7p/unit and 25p s/c, still with British Gas.

I did do quite a bit of shopping around, both with suppliers and brokers, and generally found the brokers got you a better deal because of their bulk purchasing power.
