what are my best options for texting someone in the EU?

Options
Looking for the cheapest options for texting someone in sweden. Currently I am on o2 and use their big bundle £10 payg 1000 texts ,250 mins, 500mb of data. this bundle doesn't carry over to texting someone in the european union. the options on o2 are a bolt on, or switch to international sim which will be 14p per text.

Are they any options for sim cards which are payg and will give me something similar to a big bundle? as in I pay an upfront credit for the month and get a large amount of allocated texts I can use to text someone in Sweden? I'm considering the possibility of a contract if it gives me enough free texts? but payg is my preference if it's possible.

Switch to Whatsap and use data allowance instead.

2nd vote for whatsapp. more modern that texting, can send pics/vids etc also
  • I might use whatsapp as a last resort if I can't find anything else, using an internet data service isn't ideal for my situation though as it might be difficult for the person the other end. we currently speak on discord but find that isn't really good enough for text style chat or working out too well (plus discord is just buggy as hell and has numerous problems) also, data connection on my phone is a bit patchy. texting package would be my preference.

    Why not use Ballyblack’s suggestion?.

Because the app works via mobile data and the OP's "data connection ... is a bit patchy"?

In this case, is there any provider with a better signal in this area?
  • If you want to talk for “free” to a Swedish landline from a UK mobile, via a UK 03xx number, use the Ringo app on a smart phone. See: https://www.ringo.co/rates.html?from=GB&to=SE

Not quite what the OP asked, but there are “work arounds” to keep in touch with Sweden.

I use Ringo to call Spanish landlines, it’s free to call some numbers, the app rings a UK 03 number that for those with 01, 02 and 03 numbers included in the monthly bundle, is effectively free.

Another option is a dual-SIM phone and a Swedish SIM roaming in UK (or a UK SIM roaming in Sweden).

    Well, at least until Brexit.

Pretty sure I’ve noticed that the app will work over WiFi as well (called Travel mode in the app).

Having said that, there is no reference to texts on their website now, only calls, and half the links weren’t clickable for me.
