No, a conventional E7 supply is not intermittent, it's a continuous 7 hour period.
It sounds like your friend is on an E10 system with the legacy supplier. Attempts to switch supplier with E10 metering will end in tears.
Edit: all explained on the SSE site, it's a version of E7 with a 3 rate meter (not 3 meters).

Thank you macman for the great info and link. How did I miss it, never thought of searching "3-rate-tariffs". :(

My friends tariff is SSE 1 year fixed v15 SuperDeal.

SuperDeal is for a total of 7 hours, according to macman's link.

Also from macman's link for Flexiheat:-
"When are the cheaper, Flexiheat off-peak times?
You get a total of seven hours for your stored heat and hot water. We may change the times of supply from day to day, and may also split up the period of supply for Flexiheat."

In practice my friends SuperDeal tariff storage heaters come on at 2300 - 0500 and 1400-16tt00, which is 8 hours.1 hour over the 7

Is it possible that the SuperDeal night period is also not continuous, thereby reducing the 6 hours 2300-0500 night to 5 hours., then, with the afternoon 2 hour boost we get back to the 7 hour total?

Numerous SSE staff all come up with different answers. Or may be I need to get my horizontal thinking cap on.:o

Any one that can help please post.:beer:
  • Thanks for all replies/ advice.

With regards to insulation-should have explained I am a leaseholder on with 3 flat surrounding mine. Hence this not an option

Am sceptical to consider e7 as everyone I know on e7 says the lower bills are the only good thing and that it doesn't heat up very well.

Also heating up the room I'm using - well let's it's a pain to have to remember to do this everyday when you have 5 heaters in the flat. That said they do have timers which I use.

On that note i rent my spare room out to make extra cash. The lodgers I have work shifts which change on a weekly basis ( I live near the warehouse of a major online retailer so this is inevitable if I rent spare room). I've tried to be as fair as possible and spread the heating hours more evenly across the day. But with their constant changing shift patterns I can't keep up and can't keep changing the heating hours!

So overall this is why I am thinking of upgrading to a new system as the new atlantic one seem to be smart heating systems in terms of having built in motion sensors and app controlled so the heating only comes on when somebody is in the room. But I'm not sure whether overall running costs will be more expensive??

Great idea gofrom night store @30-50% cheaper energy to atlantic @30-50% more expensive year on year annual energy + up front install costs, panel heater costs and old heater removal costs magicgirl1.

Supplimentary on-demand panel would serve "shiftworkers". E7 undersised install requirements is (all ex LA/HA) the constant truth. IMO all night store heaters should be (good radiation) radiators not used as (bad convection) convectors by shutting the damper completely and storing enough heat energy the night before.

Op doesn't seem to have taken in any of the sound advice given by many on this thread.
OP, E7 doesn't affect the way the property heats up, that is controlled by the sizing of the NSH's and the way the input and output controls are set up, which obviously can be adjusted for each room. Their efficiency is 100%, just like any other heating device. You cannot reduce your usage or efficiency, you can only buy your leccy cheaper, which means using E7
