O/S Daily Thursday 17th January

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

  • Good morning, thank you for starting today's thread BTDT.

I've been up for a couple of hours and the washing machine is whirring away. I'm quite cold but am trying to resist the siren call of the heating - I wouldn't normally put it on until much later in the day.

Still too dark to see what the weather's doing the forecast wasn't very promising but there was a red sky last night so who knows...

Today I'll be finishing the last of this batch of trauma teds and starting on a hat and mitts for a friend, also some replacement farmyard animals as her small boy has commandeered and somehow lost sone if the ones that I made for her daughter. Then back to the teds.

Hoping that everyone has as good a day as possible and with special thoughts for those of us who are struggling for whatever reason.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

    Morning All

Very cold this morning, I have the heating on for half an hour before I go in the shower.

A short trip to Ikea yesterday, couldn't find anything to buy with my voucher, will keep it another few weeks until I really need something.
Took a dress back to Sainsburys, not sure what I was thinking of when I bought it, it was really quite awful!

Hope Zeuss is recovering well Candy, poor little thing.

Off to swimming then another busy day at work, hope all's well in your worlds. Take care. XX

Good morning all and thanks for the start, beentheredonethat.

I've been awake since 3.30, reading with the cat sprawled along my legs. The promised cold weather hasn't reached this area yet and it's apparently 8 degrees outside just now.

I got to the craft group yesterday to find no one there, everyone else who was going had been hit by illness and the community education administrator didn't know that I was joining the group so didn't know to phone me. Better luck next week!

So today it's Scrabble in the morning and the first supermarket shop of the year this afternoon. Having the veg boxes delivered is a very effective reducer of trips to the shops.

I have the remaining roasted butternut squash and apple soup to have for lunch, and some cooked chicken breast to use up in a stir fry later on. There's a baking apple needing used so I'll stuff it with the dregs of a jar of mincemeat and it'll do me twice.

A friend has given me four eggs from her son's hens, the shells of three of them are a very pretty shade of blue. I fancy a couple of them boiled for breakfast, with oatcakes and butter.

Hugs to our poorlies, especially dumpling, taff, Holly and Poppy. And to all carers, parents, and offspring of aging mothers and fathers. Glad you and CHS will be on a longer leash Hester. You've done so well to get through the past few months and I hope you can enjoy some pockets of time to do what you need to replenish yourself.

Wishing everyone the best day possible for you. xxx
  • Morning folks and thanks BTDT for starting. I actually had a better night last night. Woke at 2.00 and, most unusual for me, went back to sleep till 5.30. Wish it could be like that every night.

Pretty nippy out there with frost everywhere and 0 deg showing on the thermometer outside the kitchen window. Sun forecast all day! Wow, sun!

Had an enjoyable day with mates in Skipton, despite very few market stalls being set up. We did the usual trawl of cs and I picked up an over body bag in black leather, which looked new, for £5.50. I've had my eyes peeled for one for ages so happy with that. An enjoyable lunch followed (with wine) and we shared all our worries and woes, with some laughs inbetween, before heading for the 4.25 bus back home. Fell through the door at 5.30 just as it was starting to rain. Good timing!

This morning off to Aldi with DD armed with a reasonably small list. Hope it doesn't turn into last week's tour of every supermarket in town! I only need f & v, dairy and some fridge stuff. Still determined to get freezer stocks down. And I am keeping my inventory of what's going in and what's coming out up to date for once! It's usually abandoned a couple of days after compiling it!

Pot of lentil and bacon soup defrosting for my lunch, with a toastie pocket of ham & cheese. Smoked haddock out for tea, to be topped with a poached egg, and will probably have with salad and hm wedges.

Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) as always for the poorlies, carers, sad, worried, lonely and all undergoing/awaiting treatment. Take care all xx

    Good morning everyone :hello:
Hello all you early birds, I'm another who has been up for hours but I have been talking to a neighbour who is in hospital again, she was there when I was in, she came home for a few days but has now gone back in with something else. Her daughter and Lilly used to be best friends but they had a big falling out so I don't see her now but I am still friendly with her mum.

The grandchildren will be here in a little while looking for breakfast and a chance to annoy their aunties and uncle :D. I have charged up their tablets so I can get 5 minutes peace. Once they have left for school I will be doing the laundry fandango with piles of dirty clothes and towels slowly taking over upstairs. I have the district nurse coming to dress my legs and my GP is going to ring me at lunchtime to discuss my hospital visit. Gosh, can I just go back to bed please!

I managed to wash my hair in the kitchen sink this morning so I feel better for that. The kids had actually left the sink clean and washed up last night so I cannot complain. I had a bit of a meltdown the day before yesterday and properly shrieked at them as there was a lot of lazy habits creeping in and I needed to point out that they were all adults practically and I was still poorly and couldn't take up the slack like usual. It is so rare for me to lose it that I think I have shocked them into taking more responsibility.

weemidgie, I am considering having a fruit and veg box delivered, are they value for money do you think?
candy, I hope your darling pup is on the mend and will be reunited with his sister soon x

Hugs and cwtches to all who would like them whether they are poorly, a carer or just want one. Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

    Morning

    Thanks for the start BTDT

Not looked out yet to see the weather but it feels cold.

Had a really good work day yesterday and put some more dates in my diary including a few Tuesdays :D Geographically i will be all over the country even down in Brighton for a couple of days so top of my list is to book the car in for a service as its been nagging me for a while now. Today I must do the prep i keep putting off and chase up some missing workbooks.

Yesterdays gastronomic delight from the freezer was chilli and of course as usual there is loads left for today too..I really need to get better at portion control for the freezer stock as I get so sick of eating everything at least two days running. Can i borrow one of your hungry family members please :D

Hope you all have a lovely day and stay snuggly warm :A
  • Good morning, and thank you BTDT for starting.
It's cold here, I've got my long fleece dressing gown on, and a fleece over my legs,
Yesterday was a bright breezy cold day, and the temperature dropped further after dark

Yesterday was an ok sort of day, I did what I'd planned to do, plus a bit extra.

We also started planning a trip - one of my great nieces is getting married in London towards the end of May, and we thought if we're going that far we'll make a bit of a holiday out of it.

We've booked a caravan site as near as we can to the venue, and are looking at transport links. I know it's months away, but sites get booked up early in popular places, and there's nothing like being organised!!. We thought we would leave home about a week before the wedding and stay at a couple of places on the way down, then the same coming home.

There's another wedding coming up in July, DH's great niece this time, that's in the south west, so another long journey. We'll do the same for that one as well.

I will buy a new outfit, and will wear it for both weddings hopefully, since they're opposite sides of the family.

I've got a few jobs planned for today, a bit of sewing to do, and the usual household jobs.

Glad to see you posting again Hester

    Hope Zeus is doing well

Thinking of the sad and poorly people

    Take care folks.

    Morning all

Seems much colder here but Ive not been out yet will wait and see if we get the very cold weather they have been promising.

Have woken with a sore throat this morning hopefully it will go soon trouble is the clients at work have every bug going and seem to pass them round to everyone.

I can report back about the teacake situation :D the Jamie oliver recipe was ok but noting special, we tried the Paul Hollywood recipe yesterday which was much nicer ! really lovely in fact so we will make some more of them today and freeze some, we buy them in atm so I would much rather make them.

Quiche for dinner tonight although the fish and chip van is in the village so we may cave in and get some.

Hope you all have good days xx

Hi dumpling, I would say for my situation (one person household) it is good value for money, although more expensive than supermarket produce. But it's all organic, and much fresher as it's picked just before it's sent out. So everything keeps well and apart from the normal peelings there's little waste.

I get a box from two different farms on alternate weeks. You can say what you don't want, e.g. I don't want potatoes and turnip/swede. What usually comes at this time of year is carrots, onions and leeks as standard, and then a selection of other veg depending on availability. One farm I get a small veg and fruit box, the other a small veg box.

I like supporting two local businesses, and my money is paid to people working in my local area. Most of all, the veg being so fresh are totally delicious. And as I said in my other post, I'm less frequently in supermarkets so spending less overall.

If you're thinking of trying out a veg box, Google your area and veg box deliveries. You can have a look at local farms' websites and see what they're offering.
  • Morning :)

Reading all of your posts gave me a smile which is a nice start to the day.

Camelot - we've all been there, bought a dress and come home and and wondered what an earth we were thinking, glad it's not just me :)

TravellingAbuela - speed reading your post (it's a bad habit from working with words and I really do need to slow down), I thought you said you'd been to the market to buy a body bag which would have been a bit sinister, I quickly found the 'over the' preceding words to realise you weren't planning someone's murder.

Yes I hope Zeus is doing well.

ScarletRibbons - Love the plans to have fun and frugal holidays around the weddings, they can be so expensive and great that you don't have to get two new outfits.

Off to Anglesey today to see a friend and it always seems to be a beautiful sunny day when we visit, I don't plan it that way by the weather forecast but I don't think I've ever seen Anglesey in the rain and I've been there quite a bit. I'm sure anyone living there would think this is crazy as I'm sure like all the UK, we all get our fair bit of the wet stuff. Really looking forward to a catch up with an old friend, chatting, walking, eating, laughing - life's good.

Hugs to everyone who isn't feeling great for whatever reason, I hope there is some comfort and peace at least for you today. Happy Thursday.
