Correct, asked for sort code and account number, I entered card number instead of account number - 16 digits instead of 8, system accepted the number, paid the transfer to an account number with the last eight digits of the card number0 -
....... It was a money transfer from my Tesco Credit Card account to a Nationwide Bank Account .........
Can you clarify please, you had the family member's Nationwide bank details and put in the correct sort code?
If so, where did you get a 16 digit number from? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
This is like pulling teeth. Every bit of information has to be hard won and prompts more questions to get the full info.
So now we finally know (or do we?) it was in Tesco's credit card processing site and OP entered the 16 digit number of the recipient's card after having entered the sort code of the destination bank.
Can OP confirm (as was asked many posts ago) if it is also possible to make a transfer to a card account using that part of the Tesco site? That would account for the ability to enter 16 digits. Of course, where a sort code has ben entered one would expect the system to immediately only allow 8 digits in the account number field - so that does hint at some shortcomings in Tesco's processes.
Anyway, from what we know (at the moment) it sounds like the primary error was OPs but this was compounded by Tesco's website functionality. It looks like OP does have some grounds for complaint - but who knows, because we may soon be drip-fed some more information to completely alter the position.0 -

I'm sorry you think I'm not providing enough info - I thought I had provided answers to all the questions. On Tesco Bank Money Transfer page it asks for:
Name of Person Paying
Reference
Sort Code
Account Number
The account number field accepts a maximum of 16 digits. As far as I know (but of course i could be wrong) account numbers are only ever 8 digits, not 16. If the payment had gone to the card number that I entered then there wouldn't be a problem, it's the fact that they took the last eight digits of that card number as an account number and paid money to that.0 -
I bought a car and paid by CHAPS on Saturday via Post Office telephone banking, was told it wouldn't go until Monday morning. On Monday afternoon garage rang to say money not received because his bank do not subscribe to CHAPS which he didn't know.
4 days of ringing Bank of Ireland told they didn't know where money is but now tracing 48 hours i.e. Tuesday which will be 9 days after event.
How can they have auctioned CHAPS it should bounce straight back?
Help I am lost as to what else to do other than already raised formal complaint as they kept saying money in receiving banks holding account which garage has checked multiple times????0 -

I've just checked the account number field on the Tesco Bank Money Transfer page and it does allow you to enter 16 digits.0

I'll just try a third time with slightly different words before bowing out. When you access the money transfer facility on the Tesco Credit Card site, does it only allow transfers to bank accounts, or does the facility also allow for transfers to card accounts?
My thinking (guesswork because I don't have a Tesco credit card) is that it may allow both types of transfer but when a sort code is entered it will be expecting an 8-digit bank account number and without a sort code it will be expecting a 16-digit card number.
Either way, as said earlier, the fact that it accepts 16 digits with a sort code suggests the system has been designed incorrectly and you should have reasonable grounds to complain if your money is not returned.0
