He tweeted: ‘Honda: @RobertBuckland & I have already spoken to the Business Secretary & Honda. They are clear this is based on global trends and not Brexit as all European market production will consolidate in Japan in 2021.
The global trend of Japan and the EU moving to 0% tariff for car imports and the UK moving to 10%.
He's obviously deluded or lying about it having nothing to do with brexit.Turkey is in a Customs union with the EU
A very complex customs union that excludes things like agriculture.0 -
I agree, but I think the first past the post system needs to go to achieve that. Then instead of them having to be all things to all people, we get representation by someone with a clear voice for us.
The Labour party currently has an agenda it wishes to impose rather than be representative of the electorate that voted for it. Forcing out MP's as their views differ in some way suggests something far more sinister within.0 -
Ford no longer make cars here. In time Honda won't make cars here.
There is no automatic loyalty to a particular country for any global company nowadays.
Brexit may not help, but there can be plenty of other reasons which surface and help steer these sort of decisions.
Companies used to trade on a "Made in X location" in the past, but it's less common now. Presumably consumers do not care.0 -

Seems as if Honda has been steadily reducing parts production in the UK for some time. Using factories in Thailand and Malaysia instead. Importing from there to the UK. This has been on the cards for some time. On reflection not a surprise to some people at the plant about the news.0 -

Yes we were told all this before the last election. The one where Labour got a massively increased 40% of the vote comprising of almost 13 million people. Only 700,000 less than the Tories.
It was rubbish then as well. Many people have just rejected right wing politics, whether the centre right of Blairism of the extreme right of the Tory Brexit party,0 -

Well considering that Honda Swindon is the only Honda plant in the EU I guess he's got a point.
Have Honda confirmed to the MP that the Turkish plant is closing I wonder (though I guess that only matters if you consider Turkey as part of Europe)?0 -
It's funny how the EU is being touted as the saviour of manufacturing in the UK by these global companies, by the pro Remainers.
What was the excuse for the last 40 years?...when various facilities left these shores despite us being in the oh-so-protective EU?
Or maybe, just maybe, the EU is a bit toothless, or maybe it just doesn't care. It didn't interject in BMW's decision to build all X-series models in the USA, did it?0 -

On its own maybe that would stand. But it's not on its own. We've had two years of experts (how Brexiters hate them) warning that the consequences of leaving the EU would mean global companies leaving the UK. Of particular imminent concern were car companies, which both source their UK manufacture through a complicated just in time supply chain that spreads throughout the EU, and export their cars back to the EU.
Well they're leaving. That's 3500 front line jobs gone from Honda and god knows how many more that rely on them that will follow. Nissan isn't exactly looking very committed to the UK now. It's quite likely we'll lose Airbus next, along with whatever we're losing from being shut out of the EU aerospace industry.
What will it take for Brexiters to admit that Brexit is turning out to be a total disaster?0
