Non Contactless Cards

Comments

  • My Dad has requested (and got) non-contactless cards for his HSBC Premier account and credit card as he was worried about someone with a device "emptying his account".

I've told him this is extremely unlikely but he is stubborn and absolutely refuses to have a contactless card.

I'm sure most banks will issue non-contactless cards if you request. After all you are their customer.

Well wear gloves if your that paranoid.

I presume the door handle on the shop door, lift call buttons, selection buttons on vending machines, and handrails on escalators and staircases also engender the same level of fear?
Optimists see a glass half full :)
Pessimists see a glass half empty :(
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be :D

I did read somewhere you can use a hole punch on the side of the card and it cuts the antenna. Literally breaks the contactless.

Yes you can - it disable the contactless elements without disabling the chip and pin function there are many examples if you Google it

All of which is completely pointless, all the scare stories about contactless are proven bunk, no someone can't steal your money via a card reader from 5 feet away, no they aren't tracked via RFID, yes the bank will refund fraud, yes you can still use it with chip and pin etc etc

All you are doing is losing a useful function for the sake of paranoia

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Which CC are available as non-contactless, I did have a Tesco card but my new one came through as Contactless ~ and pre authorised !

Chrome credit card from Vanquis has a contactless leaflet lately, yet not Apple Pay compatible, though think I was told it could be used as contactless at a terminal when shopping by swiping the card.
Haven't tried it other than it failing to be accepted via I phone wallet.

Why do I need to wear gloves? I'm not "that paranoid" lol. I'm just somewhat glad I can use contacless and now don't need to use the pin pad.
