Blocked in daily by same two cars

  • I hate to ask this but why are you not checking its in gear? Thought everyone was taught this? As its near a school what if you would have bumped a pram or child? Or an avoidable insurance claim!

As for the parking and blocking you in, some people have little consideration for others. Very annoying!

My vehicle moved a maximum of six inches, would you start a vehicle with a pram or child that close to your car? Personally I wouldn't.

It was stupid and I fully admit it, I never leave the van in gear but because my husband is a PITA I do normally check. I was just angry that I'd come out yet again to being blocked in and flustered wondering if I could make it out and forgot.
  • Well I showed the two weeks worth of photos to the schools reception, including reg plates and they were very apologetic. They mentioned previous complaints from residents and suggested they might have been parking close to optimise space ... I suggested the best option then was they park in the staff car park that residents have no access to!

Hopefully, this stops it and we can all go on living our lives peacefully. I'm not sure if things got escalated to the police or council if I would have to declare it when selling (!?) plus it's my first few weeks here really don't want the aggro!

    Your first line is fine.

The second line though, why would they be sorry?
Are you suggesting some course of action that would result in you breaking the law in some way?

I know who would end up being sorry in those circumstances ;)

I treat people the way I am treated. Like I said, I would up the stakes if it was me if being civil got me nowhere. After 50 plus years I wont be changing and it works for me. I have never been sorry. ;-]

In my car at this moment are stickers that could only be removed with water and a scrapper purchased from off the internet with a nice description just for people like this. If that and the nice chat fails..............then I continue until they get the message. Job done.

they have a dedicated car park that they don't use.

So did reception in the school give any reason why the staff risk parking their cars on the street, instead of the car park they've been provided with? Sounds daft!

Also, you should really start any manual vehicle with the clutch pedal pressed. I've actually had 2 cars that won't start unless the clutch is in. Try to get into the habit, for an easier life.

Near me the school car park is no where near large enough for all teachers, TA's and helpers cars and they tend to stack and shuffle around at home time. Any teachers arriving early are typically blocked in or at the back of a queue to get away as inconsiderate parking by parents add to the congestion as well.
None of this excuses parking 6 inches away from the next vehicle but I suspect its either someone that gets to school early or someone that wants a quick dart at home time.

Fingers crossed its on its was to being sorted though.

    Hi
As many people have said, talk to the school, best way of keeping things civil.

If contacting the police, they may well spout the rubbish about it not being their concern as it's a civil matter and needs to be dealt with by the local authority.

It is a criminal police matter to immobilise a vehicle in the way in which you are describing. Please refer them to the 'Protection of Freedoms Act 2012' section 54, paragraph 1(b).
The maximum fine is £10,000 but guidelines will place it much lower.

    Hope that helps

The OP's vehicle is parked on the road not "left on land" so does this act still apply?

Technically any parking on the road is an obstruction but generally overlooked as long as free passage is still possible/its not causing a hazard to other road users (including pedestrians).

That is why if your car is on a driveway and there is a car blocking your entry to the road, the police will usually attend but if you're returning home to find your driveway blocked or a car on your driveway, its a civil matter.

Good luck with putting stickers on people's cars, you may want to check the legality of that.

I don't need luck. I do it and it gets the desired results.

If the Police have the time to knock on my door I would have a chat about how they were parking. They can sort the two issues out at the same time, cheers.
