We had problems with these calls as well. Like the last poster, they were asking for the previous owner of the phone number. As soon as you tried to tell them that the number had changed hands, they hung up. They never once said who they were or gave you a chance to ask. After 2 days of calls, I made a complaint to the police for harassment. I then did an internet lookup on the number and found out that it was HBOS group of companies. On finding out this, I called head office and asked to speak to the CEO. I was put through to a high level complaints office who took my details, information on the police crime number and promised to stop the calls. I've not received a single call since, and 2 days ago, a letter of apology arrived in the post.
Since this method of dealing with these calls worked so well, I'm now going to adopt this as standard for this type of situation.0
