Aircraft Seat and class change

On our Qantas flight from Melbourne to London we had paid extra to travel Premium Economy. Unfortunately on the Melbourne to Perth Leg they had to use a different type of aircraft which did not have any Premium Economy seats so we travelled in the Economy section. I note on their website that there is a considerable difference in price for the two seats, Melbourne to Perth on QF9 Economy will cost $305 dollars, Premium economy will cost $1249. Qantas have offered us a $30 voucher to be used for future bookings. We didn’t get what we paid for and could have travelled in the seats given for much less. Should they offer us a refund?

That's not really relevant as you didn't travel Melbourne to Perth, you travelled Melbourne to London through Perth. That said, a $30 voucher is pretty lousy. Approximately 1/6 of the total travel time was from Melbourne to Perth so perhaps look at the difference between economy and premium economy prices to London and divide by 6 to get a more reasonable idea of what to ask for.

That sounds like a forced downgrade, i would have a google (perhaps try Flyertalk which is a great forum)

I think BA refund something along the lines of 75% of the cost of the sector, so i'd imagine its similar for all airlines (this may or may not be more that the $30 they have offered... it depends how much you paid for that part of the journey)

It's not. The 75% rule is mandated by EU regulations which do not apply to a Qantas operated flight departing from Australia.

Qantas covers this on the website under their conditions of carriage -

“If we need to ask you to downgrade for any reason, we will at your option:
provide you with an appropriate refund of the difference in fares (or an appropriate credit of Qantas Points in the event that you are travelling on a Qantas Frequent Flyer Award), or accommodate you on a reasonable alternative available flight on our services.”

  • Many thanks, helpful advice. We’ll see if they are minded to offer more than a $30 voucher - not sure we’ll want to travel with Qantas again.
