If a Direct Debit is missed (unlikely since it's automated) then you're covered by the mandate and the DD Guarantee.

What if a cheque gets lost in the post? Or fails to get processed in time?

You have no cover for that

Again, this is irrelevant. What ifs and what ifs. This isn't what I originally asked.
  • OP just take your Barclaycard statement to your bank branch and hand it over with your cheque and they will process it for you. They probably will try and persuade you to pay by debit card next time in branch - you can argue your case with them.

I don't think so. Never heard of it. I doubt hundreds of millions of payments have been made worth hundreds of billions like cheques are, or as safe.

In fact a quick Google search of it just now showed that only 1.5 million PingIt's were mad in the first two years, worth £10m. As I said, about 1.2 million cheques a day clear.
  • Ah. So you do know how google works?

So you can look up what it PingIt was you could have looked up whether Barclays accept cheques as a payment method.

Or their phone number to call them and ask

So presumably you know what this site is? A forum. Do you know how forums work? Where users can ask other users who hopefully have come across your query or problem before, and hopefully get an answer which pertains to your query or problem, civilly.

I've got two Barclaycards - Initial and Hilton Honors - and just compared the payment methods on the statements.

The Initial card offers direct debit, bank transfer, QR code via Pingit or at an ATM, and debit card.

The Hilton Honors card offers direct debit, bank transfer, QR code via Pingit or at an ATM, debit card, cash or cheque at a bank, or cheque by post.

I'd forgotten just how much of a faff cheques are - all the info that needs writing on the back, sticking it in an envelope, putting it in the post, allowing enough time to meet the payment date ... Thank goodness for direct debits and the faster payment system!
