Hastings validation check.

I am a named driver on my daughters hastings car insurance policy which she has held with them for 14 months - renewed with them again in November 18. This morning she received a letter from the validation dept of hastings asking her to provide driving licence details for us both and if we didn't do this they would cancel the policy on the 16th of jan! was quite worried about this so she called and asked why she had to do this and was told it was because I ( the named driver ) had a speeding conviction on the 30th August 2016.
Horrified and completely panicked by this I rang them to say I certainly hadn't got a speeding conviction and where had this information come from ?.I checked on the DVLA website which showed no convictions. They told me even though they had given my daughter this information they couldn't discuss this with me until they had permission to speak with me from my daughter although they can discuss any driver on the policy with my daughter apperently .After a lot of phone calls and them eventually having permission to speak to me they checked my licence and confirmed I didn't have a speeding conviction. I asked them where they had got this wrong information from and they told me it was because I have done an online quote in the past and entered on the quote that I had a speeding fine in 2016 which I certainly haven't done.
My concern is this could have affected my daughters policy if we hadn't acted quickly and have they breached the data protection act ?, they can give me no definitive answer as to exactly where this false information has come from which is very worrying . any advice very gratefully received. Thankyou

Its her policy how have they broken data protection? She agreed to provide accurate information about all drivers included.
