New Build Extras - Carpets

Options
I'd like some advice or the benefit of someone's wisdom please?

I purchased a new home 18 months ago and had it carpeted under the auspices of the builder (I paid them and their sub-contractor did the work) paying a somewhat premium price in the process!

Wind forward 18 months and I have just had 50% of the carpet replaced because it was beyond stretching. The amount of shrinkage/settlement has been considerable in the house.

I now find myself with a marked difference between the two areas of carpet. This is in all areas, i.e. high footfall areas and (very) low footfall areas such as the airing cupboard and built in wardrobes.

I am claiming that I shouldn't have to live with a clear two-tone effect due to this not being my fault.

The builder, unfortunately, just keeps repeating that "carpets fade over the time." Whilst I know this I don't see why I should have to accept it. Until 50% was replaced the fading was uniform.

Furthermore, they have not acknowledged my request to come and see it - they are claiming that they have got the manufacturers to check samples in the warehouse. I have passed on my concerns that they may not have fitted the correct carpet originally - the difference is that much.

Currently I have this logged in their formal complaints procedure but don't hold out much hope. After all the people who look at the complaint will be the same people who are advising the customer reps I am talking to.

Apologies - this has been a little long but does anyone have an opinion on whether this is something I can pursue through small claims or mediation once I have exhausted the complaints process?

Thank you for reading

So they’ve replaced the damaged carpets and left you with others that didn’t need replacing?

Sounds fair, why do you think they should recarpet the whole house?

Because the carpet was the same colour throughout and isn't now.

I don't have what I paid for any longer.

No I’m afraid not. Aggressive is correct.

The carpets in the other rooms are ok. Why should they pay?

Thanks for asking. In my opinion they are not ok because the two areas of carpet are different colours. If my blue car was damaged and needed a new door I’d be a bit annoyed if they put a red one on!
