Peugeot 207 brake lights not working

Options
Both brake lights on my Peugeot 207 aren't working, only the high level brake light above the rear window is. Anyone know what the problem here is? It's not the bulbs as it would be a coincidence if they had both went at the same time plus I've already checked that it's not the bulbs.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • Just need to find out which fuse it is.

On my car, it was the wires that were split, where it bends every time the hatchback is opened.
  • Checked 2 fuses which I think are the correct fuses but I could be wrong as the manual isn't very specific. I also checked the brake switch in the footwell too but I don't think it's that because when I disconnect it the high level brake light doesn't work but it works when connected.

Oh well, looks like a garage job as I have no idea now.

First check the bulbs and the earthing at the lights. Plus see if you have 12v at the plug in connector at the back of the light cluster when the brake pedal is pressed.

Checked the bulbs by using new spares so it's not them. Tail lights, indicators and reversing lights still work. There is only one connector at the back of the light cluster. Don't know what the earth is though.

Well given hardly anyone ever checks their bulbs and only find out things like brake light bulbs have failed when it is at the MOT test it is perfectly possible for one to fail then the other do by the time they have it pointed out to them that the other one has gone too.

The earth is the negative connection which usually goes to the main vehicle body near the rear light unit and without an earth current can't flow so light won't work. Often on older vehicles corrosion occurs so the earth either performs poorly or fails. You can actually test if it is OK though by turning on the sidelights, putting on the fog lights then turning the hazards on. If the sidelights and fog lights don't go dim and do a disco when the indicator flashes on then the earth is most likely OK.

You need to check for 12V when the brake pedal is pressed and if there isn't one work back from there.

How have you checked it isn't the bulbs, have you changed them? The bulbs are fed from the same circuit that the high level brake light uses so everything is working up to the feeder wire to the bulb holder.

Considering both were working at the weekend when I checked the reflection in my kitchen window, they must have both blown together which is unusual. Only found out last night when somebody walking by mentioned it when I was getting out of the car.

  • Turns out the spare bulbs I had were knackered too. Bought some fresh brand new ones and they worked. Result.:D
