Halifax won't refund my overdraft fees, got called 'dippy' by staff member at branch

Options
As it was nearing Christmas time, I had the misfortune of falling to being a victim of fraud, several foreign transactions from Moldova were made on my Halifax bank account. The amount spent put my account into an unauthorised overdraft. I had no issues with getting a replacement debit card and a full refund of all the fraudulent transactions.

However, I've I'd as I would expect been charged for going into an unauthorised overdraft. No worries I thought, surely if it's as a result of fraud that wasn't my fault, Halifax will refund those fees, right? WRONG!!!!

When I went into branch to ask for it to be sorted out, I ended up speaking with the manager about it and he said he could but won't as it's my responsibility to keep track of my budgeting and spending and it's obvious I need help with this. I told him I manage my finances just fine and why should I suffer because I was a victim of fraud that can happen to just about anyone with a bank account, even if very vigilant like I am.

The manager then had the nerve to start talking to me like I'm slow or a child and said "It's obvious you're a bit dippy aren't you?"

Where do I go from here as if I make an offical complaint, it'll be his word against mine! :(

    Raise a formal complaint.

    Close all your Halifax accounts.

    Don't bank with Halifax again.

Don't stew on it or get irate. Life is too short to waste time on these twerps :-) There are plenty of other banks that will take your custom and you can get money for switching, which may well cover the overdraft fees and give you some extra spending money.

    you got called "dippy"

would love that from bank staff … then we could have a real chat

    :)
  • Hmmm I doubt this was the conversation.

Fees will be refunded - just raise a complaint with them on that subject and leave the other “emotional” stuff out
  • Wow. If that's the full unvarnished truth, then that's terrible customer service. Do as jamets said: kick up a huge fuss, try to get some compensation out of them, then switch to a competitor offering a switch bonus. Also leave a couple of damning Google/Trustpilot reviews for good measure. Then get on with your life in the knowledge you're finished with them.
    : )

he didn't, he said he doubted the accuracy of the OP.

OP - how many fraudulent transactions were there?
    Over what period of time?
    How much were they, roughly?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

As above I would just echo that - make a formal complaint about the overdraft charges

Doubting the accuracy is as good as calling someone a liar. If you doubt the conversation happened, that means the OP made it up, thus lied.

Dress it up all you like, he accused him of lying.

There are obviously bits missing from the conversation because the bank managers response doesn't make sense in the situation described.

I wouldn't say he's calling the OP a liar just that the OP is missing some information.
  • But then ask if there is anything missing, don’t doubt the accuracy.

Too many people on these boards quick to make their own judgements and accuse people lying/bending the truth/keeping vital info out for example.
