Are UK marriage records searchable?

Hi All,

I'm trying to track down further information on somebody who recently died. I've heard they remarried at some point in the last 20 years, and don't have a lot to go on other than a couple of potential names of the spouse.

Its much more complicated than I'd like to go into on a public forum, but I am a relative of the deceased, who hasn't seen them in over 20 years.

Does anybody know if there is a way to search UK marriage/death records? Or know of any other ways that I might be able to find any more information on them?

Thanks in advance,

TMS

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Can I ask which country you think the marriage took place in?

The reply Elsien gave you covers England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different records.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

    It would be England.

I can't see any way to search marriage records from the link elsien has provided. It only allows the ordering of a marriage certificate if I know the GRO number, which I don't. Without the GRO number it appears I would need to know the date of the marriage within 1 year.
  • The easiest way would be to look on Ancestry, it is a paid website but many libraries have free access.

    Try your local library.

  • My husband suggests try Free BMD website, but he isn't sure how far back it goes.

    Hope that helps

Ancestry website definitely has marriage records, I've used it. Use the free trial then cancel.
  • I believe you can get a two week free trial with ancestry.com. Once you've found the record you need, if you need copies of certificates don't just click on the link provided by ancestry - that's an expensive way to buy them. Go direct to the records office - much cheaper.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...
  • Some counties have birth deaths and marriages searchable on line. I have used Cambridgeshire’s on line search facility checking dates for family records, frustratingly neighbouring Suffolk has no such facilities.

On-line indexes only go to 2005/2007 so if they died recently you won't find anything in the death indexes for them. You would need to check the recent indexes (only available on microfiche at a few specific libraries).

But if you know the area where they would probably have died a call to the local registration office should enable you to easily get a copy of the death certificate, which would usually show details of their spouse, if they were still married at the time of death.
