BMW wheel bearing - don't want to be ripped off

And if you're DIYing there's not problem of not knowing how the bearing's been fitted. Which is at least part of the reason I always used to DIY. I knew the bloke's capabilities who was doing the work!
We always used to say about luxury cars, "Them that can afford to run them can afford a new one" I reckon there's at least a grain of truth in that.0 -
problem is, most people don't have the gear to press the bearing out and back into the hub, which is why you normally do the whole unit. Garages are getting lazy and prefer to replace the whole unit also.0

If you are an AA member then you can call them and use their garage quote checker. You will then have an idea of what is a fair price and you can ask local garages to quote for the work.
As some other posters have said, if you're going to run this type of motor you'll need a good garage and a few bob in the bank.
I expect you've paid the £200 for a Bridgestone runflat, but you dont really need that kind of quality of tyre unless you are going to drive it particularly hard. I put 2 new tyres on my 3 series for £85 then took it to BMW for tracking (£60) - It's worth shopping around. If a man does not keep pace with his companions, then perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. thoreau0 -
I need to pay £250 for the wheel bearing on my astra J. It was quoted with another £350 for a diesel pump ( classic idle rattling on astra's - suction control valve). From what they said, it need to be OEM/dealership due to abs sensor and other stuff. So dealership wins here on their high prices on parts and garage for labour.
I wanted to buy an A5 last year but when I checked the average prices on maintenance/parts I realise I can't really afford it; so I choose a cheaper one to not have an heart attack when I got the garage bill.
ps. Just go to your local 2-3 garages, let them your Reg and phone no. After wait for a quotation and choose which one you want. Easy0 -
I sense some hostility based on the reputation BMW people have. Yes it's an expensive car, but I've had it serviced each year, I drive it sensibly (I'm a female with a professional job - there's no fast and furious shenanigans here) and I have a good enough job whereby I'm able to afford running it. However, while I'm prepared to pay a few hundred pounds I still want to ensure I'm paying a fair price, which appears to me to be eminently sensible.0

Dont take it personal, unfortunately this is a money saving site and some people would prefer us all to be in bangers, what i would reccomend you do is join a bmw forum the members on there will no the car a lot better and will give better advise and may even reccomend a few decent places near where you live
all the best“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

But I was glad I wasn't paying the bills - and that was a new one!thisisbecky wrote: »...I still want to ensure I'm paying a fair price, which appears to me to be eminently sensible.
There's no reason why your car can't go to 200,000 miles or more. One of our salesmen ran a ten year old 5 series which looked immaculate and he was content to pay repairs. After all, if he bought a new one he'd be paying depreciation instead.0
