BMW wheel bearing - don't want to be ripped off

I think the wheel bearing (Front nearside) needs changing on my 56 plate BMW 525d MSport and I wondered how much I should be paying? I'm worried about being ripped off as I've just had a tyre replaced and it cost me £200 (with tracking).

I know nothing about cars and don't have someone to come with me so if I have a ball park figure then hopefully I can stand up for myself.

Thanks

Parts £50-100+, depending on quality, and whether you go for a complete hub or just the bearing.

Looks like it should be straightforward - hour or two, more for the bearing than the hub. If the discs and pads need doing, do them at the same time, since they're off anyway.

As for "rip-off" for £200 for the tyre - I can't imagine an M-sport 5-series is ever going to be using a cheap size of tyre... That's the price you pay for pimprims.

on these the front is a complete hub and the suspension needs to be completely stripped
  • Does that essentially mean that it'll cost more due to labour costs?
  • What's a pimprim?

The kind of wheels that a pimp would love.

    Big alloys with thick-coat-of-black-paint tyres.

Just like BMW put on M-sport 5-series.

    Go on, what size tyres?

Yeah, a lot more, just like the tyres are a lot more because they're large and you can't really put JingTong Lucky Happy tyres on a M sport if you want it to drive anything like reasonably.

If you buy BMWs you accept that you're going to be paying more for parts and labour than you are a Mondeo. If maintenance costs were an issue you should've bought a Mondeo. 5 series are noted for being heavy on front suspension so you should get used to the fact you're going to be paying for bushes in the future and it won't be cheap.

As usual people on here giving false info the hub and bearing is one piece and is bolted to the hub carrier with splined head bolts basically caliper off front disc off undo the bolts from behind and remove the hub unit then stick it back together hour labour to do the bearing. Use new bolts on the hub

Interesting, and while I don't like waste, I like this idea.
I wonder how many wheel bearings have been wrecked by "murk-anics" using a big Brummagum Screwdriver to refit the new bearing, while using the floor of the workshop as a ready made source of grinding powder to add to the bearing.

Last time I changed a wheel bearing it was a rear on a Fiesta and it cost £15. It was a simple diy job once I'd got the hub off. No wonder older BMW's, Mercs etc are considered money pits.
