Is this a scam?

At 6.20 this morning, I received a text message which read -"Free text:Please reply with your name, age and the first half of your postcode" I was naturally wary and so replied from another phone with very little credit left. At the end of the message I had 1p left!! I then got a message which went to voicemail but I could not listen as I had only 1p left. The nimber to reply to was 447747770840. Does anybody know of this scam, whether it is a premium number or is it genuine?

Precisely. Don't want to put more money on phone to access voicemail it it is a scam. The phone no, as far as I know, isn't a premium one but wondered if anybody else had had this and where it has come from. I am with Tesco mobile, if that is any help.

    No idea.
I would have just deleted the original message, maybe I'd be missing out on something but in my view anything a bit dodgy is a scam.

why would you just text off your personal details to a strange number like that? i would have just deleted it and gone back to sleep! someone could be using that info for all sorts.
:p It is better to be thought of as an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt

I never understand why people call back numbers like this.

Another pet hate is when they spend weeks trying to trace the origin of a "Missed call".

'People', if it's important they'll call back. :A

Do you always do as you are told? If you were wary, why not simply ignore this spam?
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • If you go onto the phonepayPlus website (formally ICSTIS) then it will tell you what network the number belongs to-the number you have listed shows as a VODAFONE number

I would report them to phonepayPlus-go on the website as they have clearly robbed your money-as a work of advise on premier SMS (reverse billing services)-if you complain to the premium services regulator (phonepayPlus) they will help you with these robbing gets!

A word of advice, I used to work for a phone network and you can claim 50% of the charges back because the network recieve 50% of the funds taken from your credit!
Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
All debt consolodated and cards destroyed!!
As D'Ream would sing 'Things.....can only get better'!!!
  • Access your voicemail from your other phone to listen to it.

cost you like 10-20p but if you really wanna hear it, that's the best way to do so without needing to actually top the other phone up

Have you contacted your network provider to see if the message was sent from them? Also did the text message explain it was sent on behalf of anyone?

If you are with Vodafone you can contact the customer services team on 08700 700191 (or 191 from a vodafone handset) and they will be able to check into this for you. And also check to see if you were charged for the message.
