Ho do i get an electric meter removed?

Hi, hope someone can help.
I have 2 electric meters, my property used to be 2 flats, it is now been converted to 1 house and I have had an electrician put both flats through the same meter. So one meter is spare and not being used.
The property used to be a house and only has 1 electric supply coming in and then gets split and sent to the 2 meters (both located 6 inches from each other) everything is in the same cupboard.

I have been onto Scottish Power who want £800+ to come and disconnect the meter, As far as I can see, all that is needed is a big black 'link' needs removing from the splitter box.

I don't want to have to pay a 'standing charge' on a useless meter forever, and I really don't want to pay £800+ for a 10 minute job.

Can anyone help me? what are my options?

Thanks.
Bwi.

It sounds like you have found the answer to your question.
It's now up to you if you want to pay the money to have the work carried.

No one else can (legally) assist you

I had the same thing done for free a couple of years ago.

You need to make clear the 2 meters are 6 inches apart.
i.e they don't need to "cap" the supply.

Ring your energy supplier to arrange it. It's not easy getting to the correct department!
  • You can arrange to install your own electric meter so I would suspect that you can employ a private qualified electrician to remove it. Then inform the supplier. Business users seem to have inflated rates for this minor job
Scottish Power seem to always charge the most to install/remove meters.. They use to charge over £200 to just exchange a prepay for a credit meter..a twenty minute job.. OFGEM banned that practice

If you arrange to install your own electreic meter, I suspect there is nothing to stop you removing your meter.

But you can't go tampering with other's meters (such as those owned/leased by your energy supplier) - that would be a criminal offence ;)
You could be fined and/or sentenced to up to 5 years in prison upon conviction ... not to mention be very dangerous.

Why not just change the supplier for the defunct meter to a supplier who doesn't require standing charges?
    Cost zero.

Because I doubt any other supplier will take on one of a pair of meters (MPANS) registered to a single address.

I certainly am unaware of any supplier who offers a zero standing charge tariff who would.

Are you contacting Scottish Power because they are your energy supplier? or because they are the DNO for your region?

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribution_network_operator

I had to have an old bitumen and asbestos insulated cast iron cable head replaced. The job involved external excavation and underground jointing of the live supply cable. The DNO - in my case Northern Powergrid - did the job for about £150

Have you contacted your DNO? Would they do this job?

It’s the energy supplier that needs contacting.

A zero standing charge tariff won’t last forever so it’s better to try and get meter removed.
  • Try Scottish Power connections.

They deal with connections - they can look up your supply and see the plans on their side.
    baldly going on...

Only your Supplier can instruct the Meter Operator to remove the meter. The DNO will only work on a meter in an emergency.
If you also need the supply cable removed (depends on location of 2 meters) then this has to be done by the DNO. No one else can do this work.
