E.On sent a high Bill

Good afternoon,
In October 2017 we moved house, and contacted E.on to organise a new plan. It was agreed that we would be charged around £55 for unlimited usage. However today we have had a bill arrive at our door saying we owe them over £1400. My partner contacted them and they explained that the £55 was estimate. This is outrageous.... we were sent a statement in July saying we were in credit, if we owed them money why wasn't this stated on the statement then? Why are we only knowing about this now? They have at least three meter readings since then, they say they emailed us asking for more but we have had nothing. What can we do to get this resolved.
Hello terriburr and already some excellent advice on here - thanks all.
It sounds like you went on to a 1 Year Fixed Tariff in October 17. This would've fixed the unit prices and daily standing charges for the duration of the agreement but wouldn't have been for unlimited usage. The Secure Bill tariff wavelets mentions above wasn't available at that time. As matelodave says, the more energy used, the more the costs.
As you had just moved in, we'll have estimated the monthly payments based on what we knew at the time. We review Direct Debits every quarter but will only change them at the mid-point and annual reviews. At the other times, we let you know if we think the payments need to change but leave it up to you to make any alterations. We put a message on the bills to advise. If you've an online account and have gone for paperless billing, we'll send an email to let you know a bill is ready to view.
Were you sending us regular meter readings? You say you've let us have 'at least three meter readings since then.' Is this since the July bill showing a credit balance? Guessing but if we didn't have readings before then, I suspect bills before this were under-estimated and we've now sent a catch-up bill following accurate readings.
Also, if you did go for a 1 Year Fixed Tariff in October 17, this would've have run out now. As Robin9 asks, have you since changed tariff/supplier or defaulted to our standard tariff - Energy Plan? It you're on Energy Plan, these prices will be higher than the previous one year fix adding to the costs between October 18 and now.
Please talk to us and we'll be happy to look at setting up a payment plan to spread the balance over a more manageable period.
Sorry if my speculation is off track terriburr. Hope this points you in the right direction.

It comes down to your taiff(s) and your consumption. The latter being verified by your meter readings.
For EON to show you in credit in July and in debt now suggests meter readings were not being supplied in the first year.
I also moved to EON in Oct 2017, and renewed on a new deal with them in Oct 2p18. In a 2 bed flat using 7000 - 8000 kWh of gas and 2000 kWh of electricity, I paid £55 per month in the first year, got a small refund from EON at the end of the first year, and now pay £50. Readings every 3 months is all EON ask for, though I take monthly just to keep an eye on consumption.
You need to look at your meter readings and check these against the bills you've had, and the terms of the tariff(s) you agreed to.
Many thanks for letting us have meter readings so regularly PeterGr. If you like, you can enter up to 12 sets of readings each quarter online or about one set per week. Anything over this would need to be done manually by one of our advisors.
Thanks again.

My tariff with E.On ends in Feb. With the notification they sent a projection of the 12 month cost of both fuels (I assume based on last year's consumption) =£970, if I moved to their
Fix 1 Year Exclusive Dec 2018 tariff.
Of course, I've checked Energy Club but I didn't find this tariff. I also found hardly any tariffs under £1000.
Can anyone explain?0 -
The Fix 1 Year Exclusive Dec 2018 tariff is listed in the 'Expired Products on the EON website, even though its still current. My experience is that means it is only available through certain channels.
When I last switched the EON tariff I went for was available through comparison sites, but not through EON's own website. Its confusing but you just have to consider them as alternatives and do your own comparisons.
As you have discovered prices have increased significantly during 2018.0 -

Hello Fitzmichael.
Our Fix 1 Year Exclusive December 2018 tariff is only available through Compare the Market. It's due to be withdrawn today.
For a fuller picture of what's available, pop your usage in kWh on to this or other Price comparison sites. You'll be able to see tariffs both from us and from the other suppliers. Your usage will be shown on the notification we've sent.
Hope this explains Fitzmichael. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Thanks, Malc,
I saw today was 8th, so went back and found it. I've signed up for 2 yrs, as it seems unlikely that prices will come down or another big supplier will beat it.
