Why can't I port my telephone number?

My parents moved to NOWTV for landline and internet access from post office to save some money. They were not told the number could not be ported and when they switched they were just given a new number. Not a big deal for me but they had the same number for over 30 years and it was a major disruption for them. NOWTV call centre staff just blamed the post office. Raised a complaint but didn't get anywhere.0
