I also had major issues with Barclays trying to open my student account.
Being a Masters student who applied direct, I had no UCAS information. My offer was sent by email. This meant to the lady who I saw- ‘it’s an online university with no campus and we don’t accept them because they’re not real unis’ I told her to google my uni as the website had pictures of the campus but she was adamant she was right.
The bloke in the complaints department had a mate who went there and has visited the campus- he’s said it’s the stupidest thing he’s ever heard. I took my student loan documents into my local branch (who know my uni well) I told the lady what was said. She rolled her eyes, checked my documents, pressed a few buttons and said ‘I have no idea why anyone thought it’s not a real uni’ And the hoo-hah that was caused when I asked them if I could keep it when I started at the OU- because I’m a rare breed of OU student with a maintenance loan they couldn’t compute this and kept repeating ‘oh but OU students don’t have maintenance loans because that’s what we’re told in training’ :D

Daftest reason for leaving a bank- possibly Lloyd’s because after 6 attempts of them trying to send me a Chip and Signature card I gave up :D

Left banks when the queues have been too long.

I do wish they'd staff up appropriately at peak times.

Do you have silliest reasons for starting threads?
I am finding the thread very interesting. We don't all share your views Zanderman.

Santander lost my custom due to the poor manners of the 12 year old manager.
  • Barclays, many years ago, I think they were still using quill pens at the time.
I had £30 in a savings account. The branch moved to new premises and somehow, during the transfer, the record of that £30 went missing. No amount of protestations would persuade them. They even suggested that I had withdrawn the money and it hadn't been recorded in my passbook.

I changed banks to Trustee Savings Bank, next door.
Revenge was sweet many years later. I received an account opening (not a switch) bribe of £100 then closed the account. Allowing for inflation etc. the £30 would have been worth more at that time but it was quite satisfying.

The final straw with NatWest was when they franked a counter deposit as taking place on the 30th February.

And it wasn't a leap year. :rotfl:

At the age of 68 I've made rather a lot of decision which at the time seemed reasonable but now make me cringe.

Possibly the silliest recently is that I dumped TSB following the Brexit referendum because it's not British. But I shop at Sainsbury's whose largest shareholders are divisions of the Qatar government. Oh yes it is, it's surprising how many people think that Sainsbury's is British. Anyway, I escaped the TSB problems and therefore kept my sanity and my cash flow so the decision to leave TSB was a good one.

    I don't think I suggested you did?
And, clearly, some people find the thread interesting, I don't think I suggested they didn't?

Are any UK banks solely British?? I used to think that Natwest, Lloyds, Halifax and Barclays were but then, I’m sure I read on here that they weren’t! That all banks have foreign shareholders, etc.

It depends how you define Britishness, but if you choose to use the nationality of shareholders then no publicly-listed company can be guaranteed to be 'solely British' as anyone in any country can buy its shares!
