A couple of years ago I rented a wheelchair in Montreal. The shop took a $300 dollar deposit, which they refunded on return of the wheelchair. I used Barclaycard for this, as I did for hire car deposits, on the same holiday.
On my statement this was processed as a purchase and a refund (unlike car hire deposits), meaning I was charged conversion fees each time, so I was quite a bit down on the transaction.
I complained about this to Barclaycard, who very promptly credited my account with the fees I'd been charged, so I think the way forward in this case is via Barclaycard rather than the hotel, who have refunded the full amount in Euros.
