Why not tell us what car/age/mileage it is to give us a chance of providing useful answers? Although it's very unlikely that anyone is going to recommend Halfords or KwikFit.

    Find a good local garage.

5/6 years old then decent garage and get them to stamp the book if for no other reason than to give you an idea of when it was last done.

Use a decent independent garage or a BMW specialist if you have one near. Might be worth getting a quote from your BMW dealer though, they're sometimes not as expensive as you might think.

My very strong advice would be to get it serviced every 9,000 miles, NOT the 18,000 or so the car / BMW will tell you.

Also, check the oil level twice a month and top it up as necessary.

The oil - no matter what internet "experts" will tell you degrades horribly at those intervals and the engine also uses oil.

Loads of stories of snapped chains but nearly all of them can be traced back to the minimum of servicing and not checking oil levels and topping up.

Does that include the guy who runs a Youtube channel who has a masters in mechanical engineering and does proper testing? Is he just a clueless expert as well? So I guess the tests Mobil did running an engine on a test cycle for 500,000 miles, doing 20,000 mile changes with their long life oil which was sampled and tested every 5000 miles, with the test ending up stripping the engine at the end of the 500,000 miles where they saw next to no wear was all rubbish too?

Mercedes trucks I used to drive years ago were on 100,000km/60,000 mile oil changes. They had a built in centrifugal oil cleaner. No reports of them dying prematurely and many ended up being shipped to Africa having done several hundred thousand km here first.

This isn't the 1970s any more and your opinion is about as worthless as you claim those on the internet are. If it isn't then perhaps you can back up your claims with research and test papers from the last 2/3/4 years?
