Looking to switch Energy Supplier

Just passed our 1st year as a new homeowner and currently, we have no Gas in our property and an immersion Heater and find our usage us somewhat high for a 3-bed Mid terraced House, Our last Bill estimated 13,065Kh for the year.

My wife was ill-advised when signing up with e-on and set up a Direct Debit and now accrued up to £781 in debt with them when they never contacted us to say we weren't paying enough DD.

Now being out of our 1 Year Fixed Rate I'm taking over looking for an energy supplier and looking for ways to save money in on my bills and energy efficiency using Immersion Heater for our Hot Water Only. We have Electrical paneled radiators in the property which are rarely turned on.

Thanks in Advance

John

    Key word - estimated

In the last 12 months have you been reading your meter and giving the readings to Eon. What is your last bill - is the reading Estimated.

Have you the reading from when you moved in ? Please read the meter now and do your sums - units used/pence per unit plus standing charge all plus VAT. What the total and how does this compare with the DD's paid ? DD's are at the very best an educated guess from the beginning.

You say 12 months - have you had the formal email advising you can switch ?

I do assume that when you moved in and gave your readings to Eon and then put your consumption into a comparison site. If not you are on Eon's standard (ie expensive) tariff.

Now you know your actual consumption (not Eon's estimated) put the figures into a comparison and see what the savings are - ignore what the system says about saving as that is based on standard tariffs and can be misleading.

So what is the actual use ?

The energy co do not know what your actual use will be, their best guess is the previous user's profile and yours is likely completely different. Submit readings once a month and ask for a bill. You will then see how your account stands each month and can adjust the DD if you want. Is the debt based on an actual read ?

Using panel heaters will always be expensive so you need to look for the cheapest electric available and keep an eye on what you are using. Try changing how you use your heaters and read the meter daily and you will see how it affects cost.
  • We are currently on a Smart Meter so assume the reading is correct although they seem high, actual usage was just over 12,000Kwh for last year, we have been moved onto E.ON EnergyPlan which is (I Believe) is now a rolling plan with a variable rate.
  • Is it worthwhile switching the Immersion heater off during the day when nobody is at home?

Unless it was a Smart meter installed by Eon at your request (ie you did not inherit it) it is not working in Smart mode ie its dumb and needs you to read it.

Look at your bills - do they say estimated E, actual A or consumer C ?

  • Apologies for being vague, we inherited the Smart Meter and previous Owners were with E-On, having previously been on Pre-payment meters this is all new to us, certainly for Electricty any way. Bills say A=Actual

Ok lets just stick with meter readings - what were they when you moved in and what are they now?

If the 12,000 kWh usage is confirmed that is 33 kWh per day which is high especially when nobody is at home during the day and you don't use the panel heaters.
An immersion might use 8kWh to heat up a tank of water; if, say, you use 10 kWh on TV, cooking, boiling the kettle etc then the immersion tank would be being emptied, filled and reheated 3x per day.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

If you don't use the panel heaters, have no gas - how do you keep warm?

If the immersion heater tank is a modern one, fully insulated then once upto temperature it will use very little in elec till you do your washing up.

A thought or two - lots of electrically heated showers. ????? american style fridge/freezer ????

You need to sit down and work out where your energy goes every day. Read your meter every morning and evening at the same time for a week .
