Yes I am not knowledgeable with such technology. I have picked things up as I've gone along, largely through use of 'Which?' Consumer Association, and gleaning things from what people say, for instance a friend and this thread...
Is there really a significant difference between 240 GB and 256 GB? Or is it something more 'cosmetic'?
I assumed the discrepancy signified a difference of manufacturer labelling, rather than something more notworthy…
There was also the idea of buying both SSDs and memory stick 'in one go' through Amazon.
How much more of a difference would the items on your links make?
I can always change my order on Amazon as it's not been shipped yet, though likely will be tomorrow!
I look forward to hearing from you,

Just change it. The amount you are saving is much more than buying a new laptop, so you might as well buy the best. £8 difference is nothing by that measure.
Longer warranty(five years against three), better performance and slightly higher capacity.
Sandisk Plus released four years ago. So relatively old tech.

...and since I have you online already, are of good advice, and I'm about to change the order anyhow -
Is the following 2GB memory stick OK, or would you advise another?

Many thanks0 -
I would open my laptop up and see what is inside the memory bay.
Some laptops have one slot, most have two slots, and there are some with four slots, but I have never seen one - very top end spec.
You need to find if your existing 2GB module is a 2x1gb or 1x2gb, also find out the memory spec - the numbers on the existing memory (take a photo of both sides). If you are lucky you will have 1x2GB on a 2 slot system.0 -

Normal price for generic RAM. You can buy cheaper Chinese ripoffs here; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Genuine-Crucial-Memory-Ram-Laptop-DDR2-PC2-6400S-800-MHz-SODIMM-200-PIN/302932829105
I prefer to buy refurbished name brand if I'm keeping to a budget.

It has two slots, with currently 2GB (that's all I know)... So the idea was for 2 x 2GB...
These are it's exact specifics:
Dell 2009 - Studio1555
Commodity: MEMORY
Part Desc.: DIMM,2GB,800,256X64,8K,200
The above links to what I'm told is a compatible memory stick for that purpose...

Indeed DELL Studio 1555 is quite likely 2 x 1GB currently. So OP may need to buy 2 x 2GB.
In that case I would refer to https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Ram-Laptop-DDR2-PC2-6400-6400S-800-MHz-200-Pin-SODIMM-Non-ECC-1-8V-2x-Lot/222631061314
2 x 2 GB for £6.490 -

2 x 2 GB for £6.49
It was thus worth asking! Now I see I actually need to buy 2 x 2GB sticks, not one. Bonus!
I'll try and find exactly the same as the link via Amazon, with 'Crucial' as you seem to favour them

That's not going to happen. It's fake Crucial and I don't recommend it.
Buy these; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Ram-Laptop-DDR2-PC2-6400-6400S-800-MHz-200-Pin-SODIMM-Non-ECC-1-8V-2x-Lot/2226310613140 -
Personally I would rather buy this 4GB https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=smemlap4gb200&categoryName=memory-laptop-ddr2&superCatName=computing&title=4-gb-pc6400-ddr2-800mhz-200-pin-memory
Then either you will have a 4+1gb or a 4+2gb machine. Also you can remove the 1GB and make it into a 4+4gb machine.0
