How badly will a ccj affect my credit possibilities?

Options
I have one default(BT which I disputed) and one ccj(Scotland) for rent arrears.

How badly will this affect my credit rating, I assume it's as bad as you can get?

I was also told by someone that they were surprised that a rent arrears decree would be put into my credit file as it's government debt, can any one verify this?

I was going to apply for bankruptcy and may as well now even though my debts are only around £6000 and that includes around £5200 in council tax and rent arrears .

Can somebody advice, I have nothing to lose anymore going for bankruptcy as the ccj will have totally destroyed my credit chances anyway, is this correct?

A CCJ isn't great, but settling it will help and time will help repair your files.

Bankruptcy is obviously a lot worse and can impact you for much longer.

what are the dates of the ccj and default? have you checked your report via free sites? MSE and Noddle/GiffGaff will give you a free "score"

Default in July 2017 and ccj is aug 2018.

The ccj is only for £645, seems unfair, I didn't even know about paying it off after one month of recieving it, recalls etc.

So a bankruptcy is way worse than a ccj? Again Scotland if that matters?

I have disuted the default, I had BB from BT which worked for a day then flashing orange light, I refused to pay their final bill of around £210, hence a default.

In hindsight I should have paid but ....
  • Not much you can do - you voluntarily chose not to pay the bill - they have no grounds to remove the default.

A loss of service doesn't constitute not paying a bill

Fair enough but what's my overall credit rating like in your opinion?

    Am I totally screwed?

I haven't needed a loan for years but I may be going self employed soon and a small loan would be useful.

I assume a bankruptcy would just obliterate my rating?

If it makes a difference it's around 485 in noodle.

Being pedantic, it's not a CCJ, Scotland doesn't even have counties never mind county courts, it's a decree issued by a Sheriff Court. Whoever told you that rent arrears cannot result in a decree being issued and then reported to the credit reference agencies is talking pish. I assume when you say it's a government debt you were a social tenant and social landlords can absolutely take tenants to court for arrears and the Sheriff can award a decree.

Were you not aware that you were in arrears or did you know and hoped they would just go away?

It is possible to recall a decree but you only have 14 days after you have been served with either:
    • A 'charge to pay'
    • An 'arrestment' under diligence

Your rating is how a lender sees you based on current and past history.

The fictitious score from the agencies is only seen by you and has no effect on your borrowing

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

the score says it all. 485 is pretty bad. When mine was that level i couldnt even get a catalogue account.

Nowt you can do now apart from pay it, and wait for time to heal

Which credit rating? There's no such thing as a universal credit rating.

I can't see lenders clambering over themselves to offer you a loan with a decent rate when you have a very recent (less than 12 months ago) decree recorded on your credit files.

    Again, which rating?

It's sequestration in Scotland and if it is recorded on your credit files then it would be even more difficult for you to obtain credit.

Will you be applying to Noddle for a loan?

People with Experian 999 have been refused a basic SIM card

People with a score of 500 get a car PCP deal

    The score is irrelevant
