Old Audi Q7 or a (relatively) new Kia Sorento?

We went for the big MB SUV a while ago as opposed to an older car with higher miles. Newer car, longer warranty and usally if car within the family from new or newish, they are more cost-effective and newer cars usually not always lower road tax and fuel costs.
We looked at the Fords sdmax, though kids grown up, need space, then we looked as the santefe, lots of things to play with in there, the soretoes is very big, so hubby opted from the mercedes suv. a 5 seater sdmax is 70 -
Future proofing was the main thing about wanting the Sorento. It's not that much bigger than the car below it bu has the extra seats for the odd occasion I need to carry more than 5. Always had it in my head that if I am going to buy a car that big, I would get a car that can carry more people that my Fiesta.
With the two rear seats up, where will you put all the prams etc? There is very little space behind the third row when the seats are up. That's the thing with the 7 seater SUVs have all 7 seats in use and you have nowhere for the luggage.0 -

Can you repeat that in English?0 -
To answer your question think which car makes you look like a male chicken and your wife look like a middle class yummy mummy, they buy the one that doesn’tI hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

But if when carrying out a service your garage phones you and says it advises replacing X part at a cost of £5000 would that be a problem?
If yes, cross the Q7 off your list right now.
100k miles isnt a problem as long as its been looked after, and you can continue doing the same.
Edited for accuracy. Old Q7's can throw up massive bills. Even normal maintenance will be exponentially higher than a Fiesta. If its running on 19's or 20's expect to pay between £800 and £1,000 for a set of tyres.0 -
In my experience, high mileage is not a problem on a decent car (so NOT Vauxhall) as long as it's been properly serviced.
I currently have 4 cars over 100k miles, including a V70 on 271k - it's had a few wear & tear items replaced along the way, but nothing significant.
As others have suggested, i'd agree something Focus > Mondeo estate sized should be ideal.
While I don't have experience of the Q7, I have a similar size XC90 (on 165k miles) which has rather expensive tyres and is fairly thirsty. The insurance is higher being a 7-seater also. We're a family of 5 and only use the extra seats occasionally, but I don't think the extra cost is worth it.0 -

You bring up an interesting point - a 3.0TDI Q7 of this era will average around 27mpg.

I can get mid 40's from the XC90 if driven like a nun on a long trip, but that rarely happens.
Both of mine are manual.0 -
Yep, I get low 30's from the 2.4 D5 (Euro 4 / 185BHP) in the XC90, but high 40's from the earlier Euro 3 D5 (163BHP) in the V70, doing similar journeys.

Back when i had my 2007 3.0td x5 7 seater it averaged 27MPG.
There was one occasion where it took a full tank of diesel - some £134 worth IIRC in four days. :eek:0 -
The Q7 will cost an absolute fortune to run, as said it's a 10 year old £55k car. Fuel, servicing, tyres insurance are all likely to be a lot more than you'd assume.
With 2 kids you really don't need anything that big. £7k will get you a lot of Mondeo estate which will take all the stuff you need, or a Zafira if you want the option to go to 7 seats. If you need the height then something like a CRV or X-trail would do the job pretty well.
How often do you reckon you'll need more than 5 seats? Could be a lot cheaper to hire, take 2 cars or use a taxi.0
