Two sort of young adult books to start me off for the new year... Tempest and Slaughter (the Numair Chronicles) is a backstory book for a major character in Tamora Pierce's Tortall series of fantasy books... the shelf full of these that I own suggests I'm slightly biased, but they were hugely influential on a young me and I don't think that growing up is a good enough reason to stop reading a good thing.
Still highly readable and engaging.
Also finished Duncton Chronicles, which I guess I would describe as an anthroporphised allegorical tale that sometimes makes its way into the young adult section despite the high levels of graphic violence and multiple demises. This one was a bit of a drag and a bit too allegorically Christian for me.Start mortgage date: August 2022; Start mortgage amount: £240,999; Original mortgage free date: August 2056

The Xinran book is a collection of articles from the Guardian. I found some of them quite eye opening, especially attitudes towards women in China"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you. "

Another filler title - can't even say it was a guilty pleasure because it was awful"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember. The Girl in the Woods.
The latest Camilla Lackberg was a good as ever. The current murder was interwoven with an older crime and even an event from the 17th century.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I finished The Shipping News last night. I absolutely loved it. Perhaps not a book if you prefer a gripping story, but I love books with quirky characters like that.
I'm now reading 'Eileen' by Ottessa Moshfegh0 -
Book 4:
6/10. I read this as part of my annual comprehensive spending review (gotta to do something productive with January!). Its a nicely presented book, but pretty basic so I think aimed at millenials. (The author's experience is limited to sharing expenses with he flatmate/brother!). It did make me think about how I spend on small treats though - TGF Poundland and the chazzer! - and also shone a light on some ethical considerations that are worth knowing. If I was 21 I would probably have rated it 9/10.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Another very quick read that I thought would be amusing but wasn't. The drawings were not my style and the largest part of rhe book was cats shown as humans - it got tedious very quickly"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember.
