7/10. I picked this book up this afternoon and couldn't put it down - not because it's a literary great, but because the subject matter is so compelling. Looking back it's incredible how such injustices were allowed to occur in plain sight, and the world was fooled by what we were spoonfed about Gitmo and it's occupants. I don't know how the people behind this torture can live with themselves, nor why they are walking around with impunity to this day.

  • Hello everyone

WIll join again this year and hopefully not fall off the waggon with posting after a few months... I did read 33 books however, not reached my 36 books goal but am fine with it as some of the books were pretty long, so all in all it was a good 12'000 pages which isn't bad.

So for this year I will again try to reach 36 books.

Currently reading The Furtest Station by Ben Aaronvitch. Not my favourite of the Rivers of London Series but since I want to reread all before starting the new book I'll read that one too and it can be done in 2-3 hours...

Reading plans after that are The Hanging Tree and Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch and two German books.

Book 1: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Downloaded free from our library service using the OverDrive app. Actually finished it last night at 1am. Was sobbing loudly. DH had to get up at 4am to catch a flight to work abroad and was Not Impressed.

For the first quarter I plodded through what I perceived to be pretty one-dimensional chic lit, but the compelling characters unfolded before me and I ended up hooked until the wee hours to finish this emotional rollercoaster of a tale.

Not sure I'd read any more Moyes - the writing isn't particularly rich and, after bawling for two solid chapters, it felt a bit like emotional !!!!!!. That said, the story and the characters will stay with me for quite some time and it was worth the read.

Currently reading: Jacob's Ladder is on the Landing by Susan Hill.

Thanks for the new thread, VfM4meplse,

I am scared to count all the books I have, just waiting. I have about 50 in my bedroom and a big boxful in the loft. To be fair, I didn’t buy them all. Even someone whom my husband knows has been passing books on to me – and I’ve never met him! I give away books I’ve read (unless it was a gift) and get twice as many back! There are 52 books + 4 box sets unread on my Kindle too. I am hoping to read 40 books this year and hoping to make them fit into the POPSUGAR challenge. Offhand, I know I have about 4 that fit the criteria. I just can’t bring myself to pick a book off the shelf, probably because I didn’t personally choose them, so there needs to be a reason to read them. Am I crazy?

I am starting with “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine”, by Gail Honeyman. This is my ‘book that’s becoming a movie this year.’ By the way, I had 2 copies of this, both passed on to me.

I have “Guess Who” on the shelf too, so that’ll be my ‘debut novel.’

Please read the sequels - After you & still me - they really do follow on from me before you & whilst I'm not a lover of chic lit, I really did enjoy these.

It was ok - though I kept thinking that the central character was very similar to that in Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine.

Not sure what my next read will be......
  • I don’t read fiction books. Was given a marvellous book for Christmas entitled “The Ordnance Survey Puzzle Book”. A selection of blown up extracts of 40 OS maps from over a long period , each accompanied by a page containing a historical description of the map followed by a series of questions about it. Each to their own.

Hi everyone, I haven't posted since the early days of the original thread.

So, my most recent reads were prompted by the twelve year old middle child of the family I nanny for. She wanted us to both read the Harry Potter books - somehow I never got round to them before. It's been lovely to discuss plot and deeper meanings with her and, when I finally get back to work next week, I'm guessing we'll have to decide what we'll be sharing next. I've already suggested the Philip Pullman books but I think she was leaning towards the Narnia series. If that's the case, I'll enjoy the trip down memory lane.

In the meantime, I'm reading the current Kate Morton, "The Clockmaker's Daughter".

I've noticed a few mentions of Lucinda Riley.

I'm also a fan of the 'Sister' series. I like locations of the different stories, and also that each book advances the story arc of all the sisters.

The next one I want to read is the Pearl Sister. I tend to wait until the books are the Kindle daily deal at 99p, but if it's not on offer by May, when I go on holiday, I think I'll buy it at full price, as I don't want to wait much longer.
