Rings have claws, claws get caught and the stone falls out. Can happen to any ring.

Not true. There are many ring settings which don't have claws - rub over, bezel, pave, channel, and the OP hasn't stated what type of setting has been used.

By all means try to chase the seller by their email address & ID through eBay's complaints procedures (photos before & after with dates would help them see your point?)

Do also contact a local jeweler about sourcing a replacement stone & possibly a replacement ring. I've had glorious stones from Manchester minerals who have been hugely supportive when I've lost stones from rings. (I will not go for claw set again, but I was young & in love & all that at the time...)

Wipe the dear lassie's eye & promise you are trying to get this sorted, with her. And introduce her to the concept of SAD FART - as in consumer rights law.
May it all work out for you both!

OP did not buy from Ebay, but Etsy.

I've never used Etsy, not sure what complaints procedure they have, if any

If i buy a new car and clip the alloys off a kerb or crash in to a post while parking i cant really expect the manufacturer to pay up. I have insurance for that.

Likewise with a ring theres a high risk that unknowingly clipping it off something could dislodge a stone, particularly if its set in a clasp.

Thus the O/P needs to IMHO have the ring examined by a jeweller and understand if the loss of the stone was caused by a manufacturing flaw or wear and tear damage. If the jeweller concludes the former, then present that evidence to the supplier and proceed from there.

I lost a stone from my engagement ring and claimed on my house insurance. Unfortunately the stone was a special cut and couldn't be replaced so I had to buy a new engagement ring. The insurance paid out for the new ring which incidentally cost £500 more than the original! Think we had to pay an excess.

The stone on my engagement ring came loose after about a month but luckily I didn't lose the stone. I took it back to the shop and they tightened the setting for me with no charge. The ring cost about £250 but was from a local independent jeweller.

Was the value of your ring in the design, the metal or the stone itself? The seller may be reluctant to replace the whole
ring if the lost stone was worth significantly less than the £500 you paid, and the value is in the band or a particularly intricate or unusual design. In that case you could suggest that the seller send a replacement stone and refund you the cost of having it set into the original ring at your local jeweller. Might be a happy medium for you both?

Well not everyone is blessed with wealth but thankyou for the criticism.
Instead of moaning about the reply, why not answer the question that was also asked of you?
