Stone fell out of engagement ring only after 3 months

Hi,
Please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I'm new here and wouldn't normally do this but I don't know where else to turn.
I bought a beautiful ring from a gem and jewellery seller on etsy around the middle of sep this year. I used PayPal and prior to purchasing I made a few enquiries with the seller and expressed my intention to use the ring as an engagement ring before I committed to the purchase. The seller did not tell me that it wouldn't be suitable as an engagement ring.
Fast forward about a month (ring stayed in box for the month) and I finally pop the question, she says yes, loves the ring etc. Until sat when I get a call from her in floods of tears telling me that the stone had fallen out of the ring and its essentially lost forever.
I've contacted the seller, who initially responded with a vague 'this is odd and has never happened to any of our pieces before' response which was saturday and I haven't heard from them since.
I initially left a very good review for the piece but now, coincidently, I cannot edit or delete my review of it (which I want to do as its clearly not fit for purpose)
I've heard similar stories from people who bought rings from highstreet retailers who have returned their money or fixed the ring no questions asked after they have broken in similar amounts of time
What are my options? Am I protected by any consumer rights with regards to what I consider to be a faulty product and is there anything I can expect the seller to do about it? £500 seems like an awful lot of money for something which has lasted less amount of time than most costume jewellery.
Thank you for any advice in advance.

£500 in the 21st Century is an inexpensive engagement ring to be honest. What type of stone fell out?0

Well not everyone is blessed with wealth but thankyou for the criticism.0

15 years ago. my diamond fell out of my diamond solitaire engagement ring which cost at the time of purchase the year before, 5K
Luckily I found the stone and it only cost about £50 for it to be remounted
However it was entirely up to us, as the purchasers to have got the ring insured for said loses
Stones become loose. it happens. For expensive purchases its advisable to buy insurance or claim of the house insurance0 -
what was the person wearing the ring doing at the time the stone was lost?I made a few enquiries with the seller and expressed my intention to use the ring as an engagement ring before I committed to the purchase
what did you ask and what were you told, would it of made a difference? The seller did not tell me that it wouldn't be suitable as an engagement ring
did you think they would? all they are seeing is your £5000 -

It's not criticism. £500 is the price of a cheap holiday or the price of a TV. Both of which do not last very long. Can you answer the question NCC asked?0 -

Unless your fiancee was doing something practical and not suitable for rings that 'stick out', the jewel should not fall out of a ring.
We're not talking costume jewellery here!!
I would be telling the seller this is unacceptable.
I would be tempted to get an independent jeweller to take a look at the fitting and design so establish whether it was faulty.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
If i were spending £500 on a ring i would of made sure i spent it in a nice little independent jeweller's not some internet market stall0

When you contacted them, what did you ask for?
You need to contact them again and clearly say how you expect them
to put it right.
Does their page have contact details other than email? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Rings have claws, claws get caught and the stone falls out. Can happen to any ring.0
