Best way to keep track of bills

My set-up is a bit mental but it works thanks to a newish spreadsheet I concocted a few months ago. We now have over 30 direct debits and standing orders every month coming out of 2 accounts (one at HSBC, one at TSB). Thanks to the spreadsheet listing all the direct debits on both accounts, the days they are due, and how much needs to be in the account (adjusted manually after each DD is taken), I have it all manageable. Without it I'd be snookered as the direct debits are like a scatter gun, all on different days.Mortgage Paid Off 5th October 2013

I find the act of writing things down makes it more real. What ive found is that writing down what is actually spent v what you think is being spent is really helpful. There are some really pretty little books in the sales to make doing it more enjoyable.0

Easiest way I find is to get all direct debits/standing orders paying out in first week after payday. On payday or pension day as we are retired now I calculate the direct debits for the month (usually the same), transfer money to savings pots and pay off credit card which covers food and fuel spends. Personal money goes into our separate accounts which don't have direct debits or bills coming out of them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. i use a spreadsheet, has all incomings and out goings and are all calculated so i know how much is in the bank after each bill is paid, and after wages are paid in. Ive used this system for almost 20 years and I would be well and truly screwed without it.0
