And there we have it ladies and gents. Possibly the last one for 2018!
Optimistic aren't you? There is still another 11 hours of this year left

I agree with the others who say that up until 6 months, JL do have the right to attempt a repair initially. They do not have to automatically have to provide you with a replacement or a refund. The sticky point here is what constitutes a reasonable amount of time. According to information I have read, lawyers have disputed this for ages with no satisfactory conclusion and the best answer I can find is what a reasonable person under reasonable circumstances would find reasonable etc. I like you, use my laptop for hours each day so any interruption for an extended amount of time would seem unreasonable to me, whereas my husband who can do most of his daily internet activity on his phone would likely see a month or so as reasonable. It's all a bit subjective. Having said that, I think any reasonable person would agree that JL should issue you with some sort of time frame.
I'd contact them again in a calm manner and explain how critical to is to you and your uni work and please can they pass you to somebody who can give you a timeframe so that you can make alternative plans in the meantime. Be polite but be firm that you want an answer regarding time frame and if they can't answer you they need to put you in contact with someone who can. Good luck.

Obviously because you didn't say what the op wanted to hear, now get back to your job at JL . . . :D

Yeah, just on my break from working in the IT department, sabotaging iMacs and laptops.

Do you and @barny1979 work for John Lewis or something?
And there you have it. I was wondering how long until this was posted. Some posters just don't deserve any help or advice.

Again, I'm not looking for advice about managing uni work, computers, and back ups. Luckily I already know all this so the situation was manageable. I'm also not really looking for passive aggressive snarks unless they're genuinely funny.

If anyone has any information about how long legally a large retailer can take to repair or refund for an expensive and faulty item then great! That would really help!
If it was "manageable" then why are you making such a big deal. You were given the information you needed in post #3.

'within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience'.
If only that was posted from the outset ;)
  • OP - can't say what a reasonable time is, but you got your earlier assignment in on time. Well done.

Obvious thing to do(!) is to let your tutor(s) know what your predicament is, and to ask for some flexibility on your assignment dates etc. After all, you are paying for your degree.

I used to manage NHS training contracts and we would sometimes lend NHS students laptops.

Have you told your tutor(s) of your predicament?

JL is probably going to return the laptop to the manufacturers anyway if they think a repair is appropriate. They wouldn't be effecting the repair themselves, so that's bound to take a while.
  • Best of luck with John lewis complaints system. I've been in complaints hell with them since early November re some flooring I bought from them. They have totally lost the plot re customer service. I'll never buy anything from them again after this and I've been a loyal customer for years.
