A lot of life stuff indeed! Well done on negotiating your salary increase, and on saving so much of previous increases. Are you paying voluntary pension extras then, if your take home is lower?

Good to see you back again! 😊 Looking forward to hearing about your consultancy efforts!

Elmo, so much good news!  Very happy for you - and the consultancy sounds great, though I understand its because of the financial apocalypse loss of EU funding :(

One note: charge for your time correctly, please!

Looking forward to seeing you back now and then.

    Morning all :)

Stuff has happened, not the stuff I wanted to happen.

DD started uni, very proud of her. She says that the first week has been very cool, so I interpret that as she is liking it and happy. I had hoped to see her on campus at some point but I was called away. So she did have to do the first week with no helicopter parent hovering nearby, probably a good thing. She tells me her budget is on target after week 1 so that MoneySavingExpert indoctrination has clearly sunk in :D

Got a phone call in middle of night from hospital though, such calls never being good news. Dad had been taken in the previous day with a chest infection that had caused oxygen levels to drop. They expected him to be back home by the next day after stabilising that and starting antibiotics. But the nightime phone call was to say that he had gone down hill quickly. They agreed to call again if they were concerned, so next call at 6.30am. Shower, pack a few things, jump in car and zoom down the country but didn't make it in time to see him :'(

So the week has been a bit torrid. My brother and I are a bit lost, plus shocked at the suddenness. Dad did have early/mid stages of Alzheimer's but he was doing ok and had a good care set up. Turns out the chest infection triggered a heart attack.

If anyone has any recommendations for good resource/information sites/books for dealing with all the formalities after a death, please do say. I've sent for a book on Probate and read what's on this site. There's no Will, so it's going to be complicated...

It does make you wonder - make every day count!

    take care all xx

  • So sorry to hear your latest update. Thinking of you and your family. There is a very supportive sub-forum on here called "Death, Funerals and Probate". They should be able to answer any questions that you have. I hope you are able to have some time off work to process it all and take care of yourself.  <3

  • So sorry for your loss and the sudden shock

    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Oh ElmoR, I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. How sudden, and what a shock for you all. I don't know anything about dealing with such things, but I hope you're looking after yourself in all of this too xxx

Glad DD is settling in nicely, that must be a relief xx

    Hello folks :)
Popping in to share this snippet of information because I reckon you lot will like it...

In dealing with the probate process, I came across very old premium bonds that Mum had bought decades ago for me. Three bonds, one is £5 and the other two are £1 each.

This may explain why Ernie has never been in touch :D
