New kitchen - sense check!

  • Think it was what is now called "Wren Kitchens" website that I went on when I did my new kitchen - on which I found a kitchen planner that I could put in quantity of units/quality of units/etc and get a rough guesstimate figure for myself of what it would cost.

Duly did so and it wasn't that far out and I had some sort of idea in my head of cost when I went to local kitchen firm to choose/arrange fitting. When I say "that far out" I mean that it was accurate to within about £2,000 - which I personally didn't think was too bad and we do have to bear in mind that I was adding extras that the Wren Kitchens website didn't add - eg under cupboard lighting, the Silestone I chose for worksurfaces/splashbacks going pretty high up the walls at some points, etc.

2 sinks? 2 sets of saucepan drawers?

    Thanks pinkshoes and moneyto etc,

I'm going through the DIY kitchens planner today.

On the two sinks, taps etc, I'm doing my utility room too but the whole layout totals 19 units including some slimline along one wall (kitchen is 3.5m by 3.5 so not quite big enough for full size worktops on each side and a table in the middle).

Ive done the wren calculator and it comes to about £6k for there factory built units (2 stars) but like you say, I have extras and better quality units (full depth back boards and matching colours inside etc)

I've updated my post above with costs.

We haven't finished the ceiling, extractor fan and ceiling lights, but all in should be £12k. 3 kids and no time to finish it!!

We bought it from DIY kitchens.

We priced up the same kitchen from Magnet and Wren which came in far more expensive!

Things like cupboard handles add a LOT to the cost. We also paid £300 for a plumber as we had a leak in the boiler pipe, so whilst he had drained the boiler to fix the leak, we got him to change the radiators.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

We had a new kitchen custom built and installed by a local company who specialise in that business. They recommended and installed a CDA dishwasher. It failed within its extended warranty and for £90 (standard fixed fee for a "parts only" warranty) an engineer came out, replaced just about all the parts in it before he found a wiring loom had split one wire - engineer said it was caused by constant opening and closing of the door! It failed again about a year later and rather than spend another £90 getting the same problem rectified, we went back to the supplier. They said they no longer sell CDA appliances because of "warranty issues" with many customers. Sold us a nice Neff unit we are very pleased with.

Thanks victor, we are keeping our dishwasher and it's a flavel fridge freezer. Have you had any issues with the CDA oven, microwave, hob or extractor or are they ok please?

We rented a place a couple of years back that had all CDA equipment. It had been newly fitted that year but one of the knobs on the oven was flopping about lose, the element went & CDA were going to over a week getting to fix it. The ceramic hob was awful with its touch sensitive controls that weren't sensitive enough. Everything was cheap & nasty, I wouldn't touch them myself.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

We already had working other appliances, so only have experience with the CDA dishwasher. Thankfully! :)

We've been doing ours this year. Mostly DIYed including all plastering. It involved quite a lot of building work as we had two walls and a chimney breast removed so there were structural engineer calcs, steels, plus paying a builder who helped DH with the heavy stuff.

Also we relocated the kitchen from the back of the house to the front/middle rooms of our 400 year old cottage which meant additional plumbing considerations - not to mention drilling a borehole which was £11k on its own

We kept our existing (20 year old, lol!) Smeg fridge/freezer, free-standing larder cupboard, butcher's block, antique table, benches, island stools etc.

Splashback is a work in progress.

So, ignoring the above, our actual kitchen costs were -

Unpainted in-frame cabinets from Handmade Kitchens £6500 (including large custom cooker hood, plate rack, pilasters, all-drawer base cabinets some of which are double width, ie, 800 - 1000mm wide)

    Materials to build 2.4m X 1.1m island £200

6m Iroko worktop £375 (worktop express)

Beton cire for island top £250 (still to purchase!)

Villeroy & Boch double Belfast sink £200 (brand new, eBay)

Hornbeam Ivy tap £750 (a splurge!)

Bertazzoni range cooker £1750 (got a very good deal!)

    Finesse Pewter handles/knobs £315

Bosch d/w £300? (Bought ages ago so can't recall exact price)

    Cast iron radiator £150 (eBay)

Electrics approx £1000 (includes all switches, sockets, lighting for kitchen)

    Refinishing existing flooring £100 (DIY)

Decorating materials, plumbing bits £400 (doesn't include building materials, plaster etc)

On top of this we removed a rusty Rayburn and had a Dovre Vintage 50 wood burner installed which was a further £3000 approx.

    Total cost £15,290
    Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

    Over £40,000 mis-sold PPI reclaimed

Ok, I'll have a look at Neff then (the same kitchen firm uses these too). Are they OK?

Just been on DIY kitchens and my design comes to around £4k on there but I can't get it to match exactly (they don't do the 1200mm deeper wall cabinet I have in the utility room and I can't get the spashbacks to match) so I am looking at around a £1k premium to go through the all inclusive service of the local company. I'm thinking this might be worth it really!
