New kitchen - sense check!

Hi all,

Just getting quotes for a new kitchen including:

- 19 units (Inc two sets of pan drawers)
- CDA appliances (gas hob, extractor, oven, microwave and fridge/freezer)
- splashbacks
- integrated bins and corner unit
- two sinks, two taps
- laminate worktops

Wondering how much would people expect to spend on this to sense check?! Looking at £7,500 all in for the above.

Been quoted £2,350 to fit including any plastering, gas certificates but with
additional electrical (if required) be agreed later.

Has anyone bought a comparable kitchen recently?

There's not enough information there, what quality of units for example. Also in my experience CDA are called Cheap Domestic Appliances for good reason.

    Get more quotes.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Fitting sounds reasonable, price for kitchen itself sounds expensive.

Given that the appliances are low-end CDA, I don't expect the units are anything special.

Why don't you price a kitchen up at diykitchens.com?

    Thanks for the replies.

The quote is from a local firm, I think the spec is quite good as follows:

All our cabinets are made to order

Choice of over 50 board colours
    Supplied ready assembled
    Constructed from 18mm thick MFC
Exposed edges finished with colour matched 0.8mm thick hard wearing ABS edging
Cam and dowel assembly, for easy on site dismantling when necessary
    Matching foil wrapped centre posts
18mm thick matching MFC back panels for added strength and rigidity
Height adjustable interior shelves with steel shelf support pegs
Soft close clip on hinges, three way adjustable for easy door alignment
    Softclose hinges available
Softclose steel drawer boxes with solid MFC base and metal backs
Base units on height adjustable legs to cope with uneven floor levels
Wall units fitted with concealed hanging brackets, two way adjustable
Base and tall units have 50mm rear void to accommodate most pipework
Wall units have 17mm rear void to accommodate most pipes and wires
All units are made to your specifications
  • Units and fittings are about £4500 worth. So 3k is way too much for CDA appliances. It’s usually best to supply your own appliances, sink and taps, and get the kitchen cabinets separately.
    Fitting is about right.

    Thanks Typhoon,

It makes sense in the context of the full breakdown:

    Kitchen units/doors - £5,000
    Worktops/splashbacks -£850
    Appliances - £1,300
    Sinks/taps -£600
    Under counter lighting - £50
Accessories (integrated bins, corner unit pull out) - £350
    Total = £8,150

I've already negotiated a £650 discount (it's a local independent in the East Midlands).

When you break it down like that, it doesn't look to bad does it?!

Try building your kitchen on the Ikea website, using their planner. It's a bit fiddly at first, but will let you change the layout easily, as well as pricing everything (except installation) as you go along.

You can also get a home visit to plan, for £40, or in store, for free. And they DON'T push you on anything, as they aren't commission led sales people.

Their appliances are Hotpoint/whirlpool, but Ikea branded, with 5 years warranty, so a better buy than CDA, although it's worth looking on line for your preferred brands.

And Ikea will give you interest free credit.

They install using contractors, around £60/unit, so again, worth going independently for a quote.

Thanks vanboy, I've heard that IKEA are good value but I'm reluctant as they are flat pack and bespoke sizes.

I've just been on DIY kitchens and it's so confusing! I think we would rather get a competitive price for an all in service so if anything goes wrong we have a single point of contact. I'm not keen on the nationals hence going to a local business to design and build it.

Does anyone have any comments on the breakdown of my quote please?

The point of trying DIY kitchens is to get a comparison of the units and fittings.
  • If you have a plan or detailed list of cabinets, you can upload it to diy-kitchens and they will put a like for like quote together.

We got a kitchen from here and couldn't be happier with it.

My 16 unit kitchen was about £12k in total.

    mh7dif.jpg

    - 16 units including 4 pan draws and 2 pull out racks
    - quartz worktop
(£6800 for all the above including fitting of worktop)

    - new vinyl flooring £800
    - AEG oven and induction hob £700
    - extractor fan over island £??
    - skimmed ceiling £??
    - sink £280
    - sink tap £110
    - 3 bar stools £225
    - 2 blinds £80
    - Cupboard handles £200
    - 2 radiators £400
    - 2 new light fittings £?
    - under-counter lights £120
    - electrics (additional wall socket, induction hob and socket on island, and new consumer unit as we had an ancient one) £1300

It was bought from DIY Kitchens (awesome company) and we fitted it ourselves.

Digital rendered image from Magnet! Would take photo of the real thing but that would involve tidying up!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
