You could explore Croydon way (overground) and change at Canada Water for the Jubilee. Does get a bit busy during rush hour though. Or Surrey Quays (although the area around it isn't the nicest. But there's no getting away from that in London).
Or consider the boat using the Thames Clipper service. Then you could look to Putney, Wandsworth etc which are nicer, and have a more pleasant commute.

Croydon is not among the best places to live in London to say the least and 10 miles from CW, not sure why you even recommend it. The overground is packed in peak hours and Canada water is one of the worst stations to take Jubelee line from - no one gets off the train as there is nothing but residential in the area and a bazzilion people are trying to get on.
I know the Deptford/Lewisham/Greenwich area very well and really like it. Easy for getting to Canary Wharf and in the case the DLR breaks you've got the Jubilee/Overground option (to New Cross or New Cross Gate and then a walk or a bus) or you can walk through the foot tunnel from Island Gardens to Greenwich (it comes out by the Cutty Sark). The DLR doesn't break down often, but it's definitely best to have a backup plan!

There's loads of newbuild stuff in Lewisham and Deptford, less so in Greenwich, if you'd prefer a new flat.
Literally the whole Greenwich peninsular is new builds 1000's of flats, massive development at Kidbrooke village and around the Waitrose in west Greenwich so not sure where you get this "less so in Greenwich"

But I agree that there are lots of nice places in these areas and good transport links.

It might be a good idea to get a flat share on sparerooms etc. until you get a feel for the area, before committing to 6m+ AST for your won flat

Locals of course distinguish between Greenwich and the borough of Greenwich. Greenwich the place has very little new builds, the rest of the borough has lots. I don't think the somewhat bizarrely named Kidbrooke village would be much use to OP, but It would be worth looking at Greenwich Peninsula - just one stop from North Greenwich to Canary Wharf, if I remember correctly.
  • Hey hey hey people! I live in Barking and it is fine! I've never had any problems with safety and it has great transport links that get you to Canary Wharf faster than if you were living in the trendy Stoke Newington!

My advice would be to get somewhere, get your base and enjoy London. You'll soon discover which part you like best and where you think you want to be :)

Yes, this. I don't really consider Greenwich Peninsula to be 'Greenwich', though obviously it is (likewise Deptford is in Lewisham, but it's not 'Lewisham'!).

Perhaps this is another lesson for the OP - some of the SE London boroughs cover a huge area. Greenwich could mean Thamesmead or 'old Greenwich' (for lack of a better term), likewise Lewisham could be anywhere from Deptford/New Cross to almost Bromley.

Also consider parts if Surrey, pleasant and relatively cheap. 35+ mins to Victoria, depending on location.

Avoid Croydon, Surrey etc. It will take at least 90 minutes to get to Canary Wharf, door to door...

Have a look at Sutton; get a lot for your money, good transport links.

Cobblers, I live in Surrey and its 60 mins to Canary Wharf, including a mile walk to the station at the Surrey end.

Stratford is an excellent choice provided you find something near the station. Lots of amazing new builts there. Wouldn't go further out though cause it gets rough
