All my friends and my other half are telling me that we should not just leave the house (the annexe, I mean), but I could ask for some compensation.

Is that right? What is your opinion?

(We also have a toddler, I am pretty sure it is not going to be easy for her... if it matters.)

I think your landlord has been caught with his pants down and that he is not supposed to be letting that annexe or the annexe should be a garage or something. Have you checked the council's planning portal online to see what he had planning permission for....if anything?

I'd be wary about moving out. Once you're out who's to say he will let you back in? You will have voluntary left the property and you're landlord doesn't appear to be that trustworthy. I'd be looking for somewhere else to live to make the move more permanent. I wouldn't bother asking for compensation, you're not legally entitled to any, I'd just go.

Is the self contained annexe a completely separate building or part of the same building as your landlord's home?
  • It is a completely separated building, I would say it is a mobile home/static caravan. (Not sure which the correct expression is, sorry.)

We agreed to move in to our LL's house for the next 2 months and we are not planning to move back to the annexe at all.

I have checked the council's plannong portal and I have not found anything about the annexe which might mean it has been illegally erected?

Anyway, moving costs a lot and we have no money. That is why my friends suggested to ask for help from our LL.

    Do caravans need planning permission?

Does this static caravan have any insulation? What is it going to be like living in there if it gets really cold in the next two months? I can't understand why anyone would move into something like this? Was it really cheap compared to what else you could find?

Where does your landlord say he is going to live if you move into his house? Do you believe what he says since he has already given you an illegal building to live in?

What you really need to be doing to is to look for somewhere else and not some other cheap option like this one. Councils are cracking down on illegal structures in gardens that are being let as living accommodation so don't try to find another "annex" to live in or you will find yourself in the same situation again.
  • Cheap? No, not at all. We paid £1400 for a 2 bedroom "house" including bills in Slough aera. It usually costs £1500, I guess. So yes, maybe a bit cheaper...

One of my friends recommended this option and we were really happy as it was just like new, no mould, nice garden, etc.
And as I told, we did not have a clue if it is illegal. We have deposit protected, ASD and monthly invoices for rent.

We are not planning to move in an annexe again, never ever. This was the first and the last time.

Oh yes, there is no isolation... we have found this out couple of weeks ago when LL started to bother us saying we use too much gas...

    Thanks for your help, guys.
  • I see. So "only" letting is illegal then. Thanks.

I know moving isn't cheap but I suspect you'll have to do it sooner or later.
  • We will do asap. We are looking for a new house by now. Thanks.
