£300 a month has bills - help pleeeeaaase

Options
First post on here but really hoping someone can help.

We moved into a new property in July and quite simply we are experiencing astronomical gas consumption which is costing us approximately £10 per day or £300 per month in gas (9000 Kwh per month ish)

I have shopped around for the cheapest tariff (currently with SSE on their Collective 1 Year Fixed v6).

It is a newly converted barn single level, open plan 100meter squared (so it’s never going to be economical to heat, but still!) and has under floor heating throughout (nothing else other than heating/hot water runs on gas)

We have read all of the dos and don’ts in relation to under floor heating and have the thermostats set at 18.5 degrees off temp, and 20 degrees on (on is only 3pm to 8pm) but yet we’re still consuming anywhere from 24 m3 to 30m3 of has per DAY!

I’m sure we shouldn’t be using this much gas (but haven’t lived in a property of this size or had underfloor heating before) so does anyone have a similar property/heating system that could confirm what sort of money you are spending on gas per month, or any other advise / suggest????

Thank you 🙏

    Meter Readings
  • I’m not sure what you’re referring to? I have been taking them every day to monitor it more closely and are showing 24-30 meters cubes of gas used per day

Is this a property that stands by itself or a conversion that that has several occupiers ?

Are you 100% sure that the meter you are reading is yours and not the whole conversion ?

What is the rating (make & model no.) of your boiler ? Is it possible to use the kWh that you claim?

Have these quantities appeared on a bill, or are they just your own readings & calculations. Meter type and readings have been asked for in case you have misplaced a decimal point.

ie - assuming a modern meter it may have display like 01234.567 in which case you read 01234. or does it have a small keyboard and need you to press button 9 ?

  • No, it is just our property (I have isolated the boiler and montored gas meter for 2 hours to make sure it didn’t go up)

The boiler is a ideal logic + system s24. I have provided the meter readings myself so I can vouch for the fact that they are correct. The boiler had a rating of 2.5 m 3 per hour.
  • Hi PeterGr

The meter is a digital Landis & Gyr G370 and you have to press a button for the display to illuminate. The numbers after the decimal point have not been used.

So the boiler rating is in line with gas consumption you have observed, which means that to use the 30m3 the boiler is on for more than 12 hours a day.

That points to the setback temperature of 18.5 and the hot water cylinder. Reduce the former and check the settings of the hot water. Continue to take daily readings and verify that changing the controls has an effect on the consumption.
  • Thank you, will do.

Tightars - has your system got an external frost stat ? This might be over-riding any settings ?
