Living in Nantwich

Hi, I’m looking at relocating to Nantwich from north Cheshire and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for
Nice areas, I would also consider just outside Nantwich itself. My key considerations are being in a safe, friendly area but with enough local amenities - somewhere to grab coffee, pub, bite to eat few shops etc.
I’m not moving with a family so schools and family friendly activities are not important factors for me.
Seems a lovely town when I have visited but hard to know where to start and I’m mindful some parts are very expensive compared to others.
Thanks in advance :)

I've lived and worked all over this area for years. You will pay a premium for Nantwich compared to say Crewe, although I aren't recommending Crewe itself (I don't have a particularly high opinion of Crewe), the property prices are significantly cheaper.

If you don't need schools, then think about why you are paying a premium as Nantwich schools/catchment area comes at a cost. I'm currently just over the border into Shropshire, in Whitchurch which I'd say is similar to Nantwich, we have plenty of coffee shops, no chain pubs, independent bakeries and a traditional market town and on the same train line as Nantwich, Wrenbury and Crewe and prices are far less. I can catch the train from Whitchurch station, which is free parking and be in Nantwich in 10 mins and Crewe in 15 mins although the station at Nantwich isn't walking distance to the centre. Even better Shrewsbury is 20 mins train ride, a far nicer town than Crewe.

There are also the bits in between Nantwich and Crewe, e.g. Wistaston, Wrenbury, Shavington etc.... but they don't have e the coffee shops, shops etc.

My wife commutes from Whitchurch to Crewe and it takes 25-30 mins. Where do you have to commute to?
  • Hi thanks for your reply. I commute to Runcorn so it’s probably a good hour however I have similar commute now so I’m used to it. I have friends in Nantwich and like the town however I hadn’t thought about Whitchurch so will check that out. The train line is a consideration as I will use to visit friends in Stockport : Manchester area. Thanks again

Runcorn shouldn't be an hours commute. I live near Whitchurch and work near JLA. ITt takes me 50 mins each way so Runcorn should be about 40 mins.

I come from a blink-and-miss it village near Nantwich and I would agree with this post. I have lived in Crewe and wouldn't dismiss it, although I know most would. What I will say, and I am unsure why this is, I always felt safer in Crewe than in Nantwich, whatever airs it gave itself. Seeing this report today just reminded https://www.smoothradio.com/news/entertainment/strictly-come-dancing/aj-pritchard-nightclub-attack/

Whitchurch is much nicer than Nantwich and without the twee factor

Nantwich is a pretty little market town popular with visitors and locals due to some interesting Elizabethan buildings and lots of good coffee shops and pubs.
It also have a number of big events like the Jazz fest and farmers market.
A good indoor market, Mark,s and Spencers, Thriving nightlife and lovely park along the river.
Lots of choice of housing to buy or rent
Now Crewe is cheaper but very little nightlife.
Where you work and commuting must be considered
What type of home you want to buy or rent
We had 12 happy years in Nantwich

I worked in Runcorn too, at Halton Lea. I previously lived in a village called Barnton in Northwich, around 11 mins drive to Runcorn. Northwich has probably slightly cheaper house prices than Nantwich but higher than Crewe and is fairly easy to get to places like Chester, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham from the train stations at Hartford and Greenbank if you are looking in Mid Cheshire rather than South Cheshire.

Winsford is not somehow I particular like, I have a similar view of that as I do Crewe but it is good for commuting to Runcorn etc.

Personally having lived and worked in Cheshire for over 15 years, and all different parts I don't regret moving to Shropshire. I can see the Welcome to Cheshire sign from my house but am in Shropshire, a train station with free parking, much cheaper council tax and rates and less snobbery than in some parts of Cheshire. It feels much more rural and traditional market town, and Shrewsbury is lovely too. I'd definitely do a visit and compare what you can get for your money around this area. If you fancy a cuppa and a chat about the area feel free to drop me a message.

The post about crime, definitely check out the statistics of whatever area appeals. I work in the criminal justice sector, not in Cheshire anymore but in my experience Nantwich seemed to have a fair bit of trouble. Although posher than Crewe it was where everyone would seem.to visit from Crewe (and surrounding ares) on a night out with its bars and nightclubs, as Crewe isn't somewhwre you'd go on a night out. As a result there would frequently be far more trouble weekends in Nantwich.

Whitchurch doesn't have night live so to speak, unless you want traditional pubs, nice food and some nice independent restaurants but we tend to catch the train to Manchester or Shrewsbury.
  • Hello,
I live in and was brought up in Crewe. Like all big industrial towns, there are areas which are less fortunate than others. However, for commuting it’s fab.
Nantwich is a gorgeous town. We often go for a potter around or to walk the dog. Depending on what sort of house you like, there’ve been some cottages up for sale recently. A lot of new builds in the Stapeley area too.
Have you also considered Sandbach? The town has really come on over the last few years - lots of places for socialising, pretty town centre and a market. Small like Nantwich, slightly different character, yet still lovely.
Personally I’d be looking at the catchment from Nantwich through to Sandbach, including Crewe. We’ve recently sold our home in Crewe and in process of buying a new one. We’ve looked all over but are actually staying in Crewe.
    Good luck :-)
  • Sandbach is a good option, though it can be a bit hit and miss with areas and prices tend to keep there money because of the boys and girls schools and catchment areas and again if you don't need to be close to schools it maybe paying a premium for something you don't need.

One thing to be aware of is the bail hostel, which I know for some people is an issue and has been the subject of many protests over the years, but has been there for a very long time and generally is without issue.... Also the closer you get to Middlewich check out the locations and planning for traveller sites as there are quite a few ones locally which again have been the subject of planning appeals and discussions.

I'm not trying to sound negative because all of these areas have pluses and minuses but just do some careful research so you don't have any surprises later down the line. It's always hard I'd you don't know areas and I became.quite obsessive about checking these sort of things....

You don't actually mention your town but I'm presuming it must be Market Drayton.
Is the Chester area too expensive, because it seems a fair bit nearer to Runcorn.
