Carpetright quoting £950 for bedroom

Hi all,
We need new carpet for a bedroom in a flat we've just bought. The bedroom is a small double, though due to the shape of the room we need slightly more carpet (though not underlay) than there is more floor space. Regardless, it's not a huge space to be carpeted.
The salesman showed us some ok carpet then directed us towards some much nicer carpet, same with underlay. He also showed us the floor bars which seemed very fancy and when I asked about the cheaper ones he almost wrote it off, saying they were cheap and nasty. Throughout the conversation I was asking about price differences and it was always a shrug of the shoulders and 'pound or two?'.
So the final price came in at £950 or so. In my head I'd been thinking it'd be about £500 to carpet that room! We said we'd think about it and he printed some quotes.
It turns out the fancy floor bars are £30 each (and we need two), rather than about £8 each for the other type. There's also a £30 delivery charge (even though someone would be coming to fit the carpet), £15 for 'removal of trimmings' (we said we would remove/dispose of the old carpet ourselves so no idea what this is) and about £20 for fitting service administration (also not mentioned). This is all in addition to the £70 fitting charge we were told about.
The carpet was very nice so maybe I'm just being naïve and this is what you pay for decent carpet, but I can't help feeling it's a bit of a rip-off. Any thoughts?? I don't want very cheap carpet but equally we don't have massive amounts of cash to splash around!
Thanks!

Just maybe, perhaps it might be a good idea to get a couple more quotes?
On the other hand it's a very fair quote for the owners of carpetright.0 -
Have a look at redmants too but that’s a lot that is. We carpeted a two bed house bar the stairs for a lot less than that and fitted it ourselves:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

Ok thanks - yes was thinking wise to get some more quotes, just a bit of a faff as most places (e.g. John Lewis) need to send someone out to measure up to give a quote, but we haven't moved in yet and live quite far away. Having said that, I'd rather not rush things and end up paying over the odds, so I think I will get some more quotes.
We can try John Lewis, any recommendations of other good carpet places?0 -
If you’ve not moved in yet and your buying you’ll have the measurements from the floor plan:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

Yes got the measurements, but some places insist on sending their own person to measure up before quoting too (definitely John Lewis and heard from other people this is the norm).
I know we should be able to estimate ourselves but like John Lewis will only give sq m prices for carpet/underlay, I can't find anything about their fitting costs, costs of floor bars etc online. We had a general chat with someone in store last week who didn't seem very enthusiastic and just told us we had to book an estimator home visit online.0 -
we have to had the top half of a semi house done after doing a double story extention and we paid £300 per room including fitting 3 rooms and the walkway all came to £1100 for a very nice grey/silver carpet which seems to be all the rage now like the grey windows that we bought
find a local carpet shop stop going to these expensive shops such as jl as they are charging you for thier fancy showrooms
we also saved around £15,000 by doing most of the inernal work ourselves such as flooring, tileing, painting, plumbing, boarding etc....
you work hard for your money stop giving it away so easily“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

Replacing a carpet in the spare bedroom sometime in January. The carpet going down is a cheap remnant and is going to cost £45 to fit. Gripper rods are already in place so don't need replacing. Underlay was £50 for a roll of Cloud 9 from ebay. I will be disposing of the old carpet, underlay, along with any offcuts. The local shop doesn't charge delivery fees when they are fitting.
Total cost for a 4m x 3m, a little under £200 - If I had gone for a plush upmarket carpet, it would still be under £300.Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
We had 3 rooms/areas carpeted by CarpetRight, cost us about £1200 if i remember correctly. double bedroom, large extended lounge and landing and stairs. As it was done over 3 seperate visits (as each room was finished) we paid the fitter each time they came, was about £60/£90 per visit. We supplied our own underlay but paid a little extra for them to fit it (as CarpetRight didnt get the mark-up profit from selling us their own stuff).0

Buy yourself some Vaseline as Carpetright are about to shaft you.
'Removal of trimmings?' Really. Most people just throw them in the bin.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Carpetright had serious financial problems in 2018. Maybe they're just raking in as much as is needed to pay some whopping bonuses to the directors before going insolvent? Pay by credit card if you must use them.0
